I currently work as a sub teacher in two different school divisions with two different employee replacement systems (AtrieveERP and Absence Management.) When I pick up a teaching job in one division, I always make sure to enter myself as unavailable for that day in the other division to avoid being contacted to work when I am unable to do so. I figure that’s the respectful and practical thing to do.

Inevitably, I get phone calls, texts, and emails from teachers, secretaries, and admin in both divisions asking me to work on days that I am unavailable. In one case, an admin called me for a day I was working at another school in his division.

I was under the impression that school secretaries can see my availability because a secretary once pulled up my info on her screen and saw my schedule for the week. I assume admin has similar privileges as well. They should at least be able to see when I’m working in their own division. Do they think I’m putting myself unavailable for the heck of it? Do they think I’ll drop one job for another? (That’s career suicide!) Absence Management allows you to write in a reason when you’re unavailable, so then I put “working in another school”.

Why do I bother entering my availability if nobody bothers to check it? Are they just being lazy by not checking whether I’m available or not? Does this happen to anyone else?

Either they are too lazy to look or think you'll drop everything and work for them. How annoying.

There’s also one school that loves calling at 8:30am looking for replacement (schools where I live start around 8:45 or 9.) I understand you’re desperate when a sick call or other emergency occurs so late, but I’m already out the door for work at that point and they’d know this if they looked on the schedule. It’s like, why waste your time calling someone who can’t come in? Skip those people on the list and move right to the available ones so you can find someone faster. I’m a bit of a pragmatist and this lack of efficiency is irksome.
