did you know that there are 17 TOTAL beanies needed for the comprehension and reading strategies? sheesh! i have bought 14 of them so far! all but one are actual beanies. i went on ebay (someone is selling them as a set) and craigslist and found MOST of them. then i asked friends and family for donations (unfortunately my friend wants her back, so i thought i'd go ahead and buy the ones she has and return hers)...my cousin, bless her teenage heart, gave me 7 of them! oh, i found this when i did a search for the comprehension strategies on google: http://www.proteacher.net/discussions/showthread.php?p=592346 someone came up with 3 more! it's all on here. posters along with some bookmarks for the kiddos. so i thought i would share! I'M SO EXCITED TO USE THESE! they'll be great when i get my reading certificate and only do reading!!! LC
I asked the parents to donate the beanies (or simial small animal) and got most that way. Just a thought.
Hmm. I'm going to have to check this out and share with friends. I've seen other teachers talk about beanies and such. Now I'll know what the deal is about!
I posted a request for beanies on another local message board that I'm a part of and got most of them. After that I just hit thrift stores and garage sales. I'm curious to know what the "3 extra" strategies are as well! I know of: Decoding: eagle fish snake monkey frog lion kangaroo Comprehension: spider owl raccoon dog iguana parrot bear Somewhere I also saw "Flippy the Dolphin" for flipping the vowel sound (short to long) when trying to sound out a word. But I haven't seen the dolphin on a poster or a bookmark. So the Dolphin would be 15. What are 16 and 17?
Ok you've peaked my interest. Could someone please post more details on this. I clicked on the above link but since I am not a member of that board, I cannot see the attachment that gave the details.
Oh my goodness!!!! I collected beanies when I was a teen. I still have the two boxes in the garage, ready to be sent to goodwill. Now that I have a possibility of obtaining a teaching job, I will have to go through and pull out all of those beanies. I know there is a website about this. Can someone post it so I can go though and figure out which beanie I need? Thanks!!!!
There are decoding and comprehension strategies that use a beanie baby as sort of a reminder what to do. Ex.: Decoding-Chunky Monkey-reminds you to look for chunks and patterns you know in words. Stretchy Snake-reminds you to stretch out the word slowly, then read it faster...Comprehension-Rocky Raccoon-visualize what you are reading, what do the char. look like..., Digger the Dog-determine the main idea, dig for details... They are a cute reminder of what to do. Some teachers post on the wall with the beanie and kids can take to their desk when working on that strategy. That doesn't work for me, as they would all want them, be waiting for a certain one, always be out of their seat, etc.
you could become a member of that site...it's free. all the info is on it! posters and bookmarks included. Jem has lots of info on her site, apparently, but it's down at the moment.
the three others were toucan, penguin and elephant. i CANNOT for the life of me find them now. they were on the link that i posted originally...ugh!
FOUND 'EM!!! thank god for the "history" button! they are: story elements elephant- an elephant always remembers the "important elements" characters-who the story is about setting-where does the story take place what happens in the story text structure toucan you "toucan" understand text structure how is the text built? what is the author's purpose? sequence-does the author tell things in the order in which they happen? preview penguin "preview" like a penguin! look at the pictures read some sentences find out the genre of the story think and try to figure out what the story might be about these seem like they would be for older kiddos. i have the posters saved (now that i found them again) if anyone wants them LC
It looks like you can download the pictures, or it looks like you can print them directly from the site. You just right click on the poster and click on print. BUT, if you join that site, there are documents you can download that has posters too, which I like a little better. I joined and saw them after I found that link.
So, I want to make a list of all of the beanies that we need. So these are all of them, then? eagle fish snake* monkey* frog* (can't find, but I know I have it) lion* kangaroo* spider owl* raccoon dog* iguana* parrot* bear* dolphin toucan penguin* elephant I'm sure I have pretty much ALL of these. ETA: ones with * are the ones that I have!!!! Just need to search for the others. IF I end up getting a job as a Kinder teacher, I think I only need the decoding ones.
that seems to be the list! if anyone wants, you can go to ebay and type in beanie baby reading strategy and there are people that sell them together. i'm going to post the posters that i have on my website tonight hopefully (my internet is being finicky!)...it is www.freewebs.com/lcluigs
teacher created materials. i'll have to do it tomorrow though. my internet is being weird...i'll do it at school tomorrow.
