    Just heard on the news:

Due to the economy & rising gas prices, 600 locations nationwide will be closing, which will affect 12,000 employees. This will start in late July. They'll be condensing them so there isn't one on every other block.

In my immediate area, there are 5-6 locations. I go there, but not as much as I used to. I like Jamba Juice better.

They just built a new one around here. We have this main road that goes on for about 15-20 miles through 3 towns. There are now 5 on that road. 2 are even across the street from eachother  I don't know why they needed so many in the first place. I'm sure a few of them will close.

I heard this on MSNBC this morning. I actually think it's pretty scary, as far as the economy is concerned. Remember how quickly it blew up around 2000? They were everywhere! I never in a million years thought I'd see Starbucks "go under." It really does freak me out a bit.

Yeah, I guess people are giving up their 5 buck coffee since gas prices are so high. I personally havn't bought coffee in Starbucks or any place in the last year.

I'm still a regular at Starbucks. I'm addicted to the hot chocolate.

Even though I, too, get a little annoyed at the Starbucks every 300 yards that seem to be around the neighborhood, I also think that this is a big red flag for this country.

When the minimum wage workers begin losing their jobs, it doesn't bode well for the rest of us.

I have three Starbucks within walking distance to my house. I am there quite a bit, too, but I don't think any of them are going to be closing. They are probably talking about the ones that are way far out of the way or something like that. There are plenty that are in kind of obscure places that are probably costing the company more than they make.

I think the workers (baristas?) make more than minimum wage. I was always under the impression they make pretty good money. They are always happy!

MS Candy, have you checked for a Starbucks in one of your Publix stores?

Well, the Publix close to me, does not have one....though I am moving and not sure about that one....it is super close to the new place so that would be great.

I have checked Star Bucks web site and it says Super Target....so it must be inside, now I know one is in a shopping mall but that is opposite direction from work....but if they stay open, I could make it a weekend thing, because it is by Sam's and Marshall's and the Teacher store.

By the way, LOVE Publix! -Reminds me of the great markets in Cali!

I think it's bad news for everyone! It really actually scares me a lot....It seems like our economy is headed for the toilet. I'm worried about another Great Depression or something.

Even though this sounds like a lot of Starbucks I bet there will still be too many for any neighborhood! I love my drive-thru Starbucks the best, especially on the way to work...ahhh....

There are so many wonderful local coffee shops in my neighborhood that I've never stopped at the Starbucks, even if it's the closest java slinger.

Wow, that's crazy! There is this one plaza near me...has a stand alone starbucks, one in a grocery store, one in a target...all in the SAME plaza!!! Now they are building a drive-thru one across the street!! I wonder if that will still happen...? So ridiculous though, there shouldn't be so many in one location.

Are people that lazy that they can't walk to a central Starbucks in a plaza? They need one every 100 feet??? They are running themselves out of business. They are competing against themselves.

The ones around me are mostly stand alone locations, a few w/ drive-thrus. One's in a Target, one's in an Albertson's grocery store.

This is sad to hear, because I was hoping there would eventually be a Starbucks close to me. But I guess that's not gonna happen! (The closest Starbucks is about 40 minutes away).

I honestly don't think this has anything to do with the economy; it's just a case of a company that expanded way too quickly. Something similar happened with a local restaraunt years ago. There were only a couple of locations and everybody loved them. So when they were sold the new management decided to open up about 5 more locations. Within a few years we were down to two locations and they really struggled. One is still around. I think Starbucks just stretched themselves too thin. There is only so much of a customer base in any one location and if you have to share it between many of the same store it = smaller profits. As long as we have our Scooters here (local only as far as I know) I'll be fine. Besides, Starbucks will still be in the bookstores where they started.

A coincidental thing happened a day or two before I knew about the closures of the Starbucks. I was at a gas station & a woman was flagging me down from her car in a kind of frantic state. She asked where the nearest Starbucks was. There were 3 nearby locations that she could have went to. That's the 1st time anyone's asked me about Starbucks in the 20 yrs I've been living here.

I'm not too surprised actually. There's only one Starbucks in my immediate area (and a tiny one inside the local Target) and there never seems to be a line at any time of the day. The several Dunkin Donuts and Wawa (convenience) stores in the area always have a line-up though.

See, the Starbucks near me (both free standing and in other stores) always seem to do a steady business.
