This is my first year teaching first grade and my first year teaching in general. I know this is a long way away, but I feel like I have so much to think about that I'm trying to get a handle on whatever I can think of. So....I'm thinking about the beginning of the year because I'm so excited about it my mind's always on it :), and I was thinking of things/informaiton I should include in my back to school information packet to the parents. Any ideas or examples would be very appreciated!

    Parent Packet

Here are a few things you may want to add:

what time school begins and ends
    change of transportation
reminder to check child's folder daily
    how to contact you
put child's name on items they bring to school
    field trips
    home/school communication
weekly/monthly newsletter (if you will do one)
    classroom rules
    grading procedures
    activity schedule

I am sure there are other things-but I can't think of them right now.

I have to retype mine-I don't have it on my computer yet or I would have posted a copy for you

also check with your grade level they may have a copy that you can tweak
    :)

good luck on your new job

Looks like there are a lot of "new" first grade teachers this year! This board is great for tips and advice as well as support! I used it every day when I made my transition from PreK (12 yrs) to 4th grade. I was really scared, not knowing where to even start! Now I'm finding myself in the same position going back down to 1st grade from 5th. Thanks to everyone for the postings!!

    I'm moving to 1st too! After 6 years in K, 2, and 3 :)

This packet sounds a lot like what I will give out at BTS night. On the first day of school, I usually just do a parent questionnaire to learn more about the child.

I included most of what you said as well. I don't know how big your schools are & if you send home hard copies of lunch calendars, but our school did & I would send home our montly snack calendar on the back of the lunch & I had some many parents tell me that it was GREAT because both calendars were in ones spot instead of having papers everywhere...just a tip.

Congrats on your new job! I remember that feeling only 2 years ago for myself. Now I am going on m 3rd year of teaching. I always send out a little newsletter the first week of school that explains myself, my rules, what to expect this year and contact information.

Now for Back to School night packets, I always stress the importance of communication and how notes go home on certain days, email is a good way to contact, a grading system you plan to use, include subject by subject what they are going to learn throughout the year, days they have music/extra curricular things, the importance of homework and reading at home, field trips and share schedules.

I also do a little sheet for the parents to fill out that I keep in their file... it has both parents names, phone numbers and email addresses and anything I should know about their child. It's really helpful!
