This is my second year teaching, but my first time to do the first days of school ( I started in mid-October last year), so I have no idea where to start to get everything ready. Does anyone have a checksheet or a list of what needs to be done? I know I am forgetting some things. TIA

There are a dozen or so checklists around. Here is the one I just pulled from my closet. It is a pretty simplified one.

    Checklist for initial preparation:

    A. Room Prep
    1. furniture
    2. equipment (computers, listening centers etc.)
    3. bulletin boards and walls

    B. Choose location of books
    1. curriculum guides
    2.lesson plans and grade book
    3. textbooks and teacher guides
    4. kids' books

    C. Supplies
    1.pens
    2 stapler and staples
    3. paper clips
    4. notepad
    5. chalk/expo markers
    6. pencils
[could add more to this, I would say]

    D. Management Prep
    1. name tags and desk tags (elem)
    2. bus tags (lower elem.)
    3. lunch count procedure
    4. schedule
    5. locker assignment/cubbie assignment
    6. seating chart
    7. book covers

    E. Building Procedures--this seems like the list of stuff you'll learn at teacher inservice. Otherwise you should ask
    1. arrival time, dismissal time
    2. illness, injury, medication procedures
    3. fire drill and emergency drill procedures
    4. playground use and assignment
    5. absentee/attendance policy and procedures
    6. student referrals
    7. district, building disciple procedures
    8. cafeteria procedures
    9. beginning, end of day procedures
    10. location of waiting area for bus

I don't feel like this list is complete but it is a good starting off point that you can cross-reference with other lists.

Don't forget your sense of humor/ability to laugh at yourself....I never leave home without it.

Management prep for secondary should include things like tardy, bathroom passes, activity transitions, turn in homework procedures, getting supplies procedures, sharpening pencil procedures.....etc.
