So, I will post pics, but I just wanted to let you know that I am back! I had a fabulous time! I am happy to be home though. It's bittersweet. I have wonderful memories, new friends, and new appreciation for the northwest region of the US. I am also stinky and tired and will jump in the shower in a bit. :)

So, we traveled from California to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada and then back to California. I learned so much about the geology and anthropology aspect of this region. :)

I will post them this weekend. I'm so exhausted!!! We traveled around 5,000 miles in 16 days! Wow! We went to so many national parks, monuments, museums, stopped at the side of the road to talk about the formations, etc. It was amazing. We saw so many animals too such as a wolf, grizzly mamma with her three cubs, an eagle, owls, deer, bison, moose, etc. It was definitely an amazing trip, something that I really needed in my life right now.

Who did you go through? I was thinking of doing this several years ago, but wanted to talk to someone who did it first.

Oh that sounds so wonderful! I had noticed you had not been here in a while, but I didn't realize you had left for your trip already. I am glad to hear it went well, and that you are back safe.

This trip was a summer class at a college. The "class" itself was only this 16 day trip and that was it. We do have homework so I have to get that done and we each had to pick a topic and present it in front of the class. I did mine on glacier national park. This college seems to go on a TON of geology field trips so I plan to keep my eye on them. I only heard about this trip because my friend attends this college. I'm praying that they have the budget to do the southwest region trip next summer; they change what they do each year.

I really did want to do one!! The problem was that I had lousy cell service along the way. There would be days where I had no access to the internet. I didn't mind though! :) It forced me to be away from the internet world and appreciate the beauty and life in front of me. :)

In fact, I really started to get used to "roughing" it. We stayed at two KOA's that had showers and laundry and a couple of campsites we went to had those slot shower, but otherwise we went from campsites that had at least a toilet to one that had nothing whatsoever in the middle of the desert. I LOVED the whole adventure! :)

Oh, the only bad thing that happened to me on the trip was that my camera broke on day five. So, I was forced to use my iphone, which has a camera but obviously not a great one. :( Luckily, I made tons of friends who had nice cameras and will share pictures with me.

I had SUCH a hard time falling asleep last night. Every time I closed my eyes, I had this weird sensation in my body and images and flashbacks of being back on the road. It was almost as if I was in withdraw. It's hard to explain. Needless to say, I had a very difficult nights rest. Which is funny because I struggle with insomnia and I was worried that I would have a hard time sleeping on this camping trip. Nope. I slept really well, even when temps dropped to 26 degrees.

Oh my gosh! I have close to 1,000 pictures (not including the ones my friends took who I will need to bug to send to me). I'm organizing them into folders by state, and then I will go in each of those and organize by parks. Whew. This is no easy task!!

Okay here comes the pictures. I will only put up a few from each state (it'll be hard as I have almost 1,000 to pick from). They won't include straight on pictures of me or my friends, but if you are a facebook friend, then you will be able to have access to my website that I created. :)

After we arrived at camp and set up our tents, we decided to explore the lava beds and caves.

Bottom of one of the caves, called Skull Cave, we explored. They are mandible bones.

The next day we ate lunch and spotted three great horned owls in the tree above us.

    WASHINGTON

    Fort Vancouver
    [IMG]
Part of the trip was to also learn about the Native Americans and the people along the way. So, here, we learned about the Hudson Bay Company who used to reside in this area.

We spied two bunnies while exploring the fort.

We got to talk to a class of archaeologists who were working on this section at the fort. It was their first day, but they did a great job answering our questions. :)

We left Cape Disappointment and this picture was taken somewhere in the middle of nowhere. :D

We had the wonderful opportunity to listen to Pat Lewinski, who was on the documentary Journey to 10,000 BC, share his Mammoth bones that he uncovered.

    Montana

So, I have a TON of pictures for Montana. This ended up being my all-time favorite state.

Those "hills" are actually 30 feet high ripple marks when an ice dam broke during the last glacial ice age period and water rushing as fast as 65 mph flooded this area.

We have officially entered Bear Country. This is when I started sleeping in the van. :D

    Lake McDonald

We thought we saw a couple of wolves out in that field... turned out they were just dogs. But, I did get a chance to take this beautiful shot. This is one of my favorite pictures.

Chief Mountain. This is an awesome example of an overthrust fault, which forms as a result of older rocks being pushed on top of younger rocks.

This is a mining area, not much going on, but one of my favorite stops because I was able to collect 2 billion year old rocks, and they are so beautiful.
