Hi all! If you know anyone looking for a high school English position in Arizona, please have them check out Alchesay High School in the Whiteriver Unified School District. It is on the Ft. Apache Reservation -- an amazing experience!

We had someone decline at the last minute and haven't had many applicants this late in the summer. We start on August 8th, but obviously are willing to work with someone's timeline who would have to move. We are interviewing immediately, so if you or someone you know is interested, please have them fill out on application online asap! Please spread the word!!

Just wanted to bump this message to the top.

We've had two applications...pretty slim picking! Most of the schools in AZ have already started, so most of our locals already have jobs lined up. If you are a brand new teacher with little or no experience and are willing to relocate to Arizona, please apply!! We have had great success with beginning teachers and don't skip over them!

If you are at all interested, please apply on the school website as soon as possible so we can schedule a phone interview. (Since I'm a newbie on the site it won't let me post the url, but just google Whiteriver Unified School District #20)

We start Thursday, but have a sub in place for the first week, so we are willin to work with your moving schedule.

If you'd like more details feel free to PM me!

Figured I'd give this one more try since we have started school and don't have our English position filled!!

For some reason, the job isn't posted on our district website, but I promise you it is still available. If interested check out the district website and email our HR. It still won't let me post a url, but please google Whiteriver Unified School District #20. (The website is wusd with a "us" instead of "com")

Here are a few things that might help convince you!

The salary is $30,000-$39,000 depending on experience. In addition, you get a $3000 signing bonus. For the last three years, we have gotten bonuses at the end of the year for being a turn around school and making gains. They have varied from $3000-$5000. If you complete 8 hours of professional development outside of your contract days/hours, you also get "301 money." Proposition 301 was passes by Arizona voters several years back to increase teacher pay. It is equal to about $6000 each year. Plus we offer addendums for coaching, tutoring, leadership committee, club sponsorship and other things. The past three years I've worked in the district, I've made more than $12,000 in addition to my base salary.

I just googled cost of living. In Pinetop-Lakeside (the town off the reservation) it said it was 89.8% compared to the national average of 100%

Arizona will accept your out of state license. You have a year to take a "professional knowledge" test which is basically on confidentiality, classroom management, etc. You have three years to take an AZ constitution class/test if you plan on staying in AZ.

Another bonus for me is just the experience. I grew up in a small, middle class town in the midwest with very little diversity. Our students are 99% Native American. The students do deal with a lot of the issues communities in poverty deal with, but they are great kids! Many of them are still very traditional and share their culture openly. We have several Natives on our teaching and classified staff as well who like to share their history with those that are curious.

The weather is awesome. We are in the mountains which is completely different than Phoenix. We have all four seasons and even get snow! It usually doesn't stick around for a long time, but we get it. The spring, fall, and summer are gorgeous with beautiful blue skies! We only get high 80 degree temperatures, not the 120 that Phoenix gets. The reservation has tons of lakes, rivers and forest. Hunting and fishing are HUGE! There are great places to hike and camp. If you have to have "big-city-life" you really probably wouldn't like it here. But the town, community and school have a lot to offer!!

Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions.

Thanks for continuing to post this, AZALE. It sounds like a great opportunity for someone who is still looking and is willing'able to relocate.

    Azale,

I'm interested. I'll fill out an application later tonight as I am heading out to church at the moment. However, I will need to speak with my fiance about it (we currently live in NJ about an hour away from each other). I'm not familiar with Arizona teaching-do you guys typically have freedom in your curriculum? Are benefits included or are they an out of pocket cost?

Thanks in advance- I'll be sure to apply as soon as possible. I would PM you but i'm not sure how to do that on here :)

We did just have our benefits change, so I"m not positive about what all the cover, but they have been great in the past. There is no out of pocket cost. The district pays for it all.

Because we are a turn around school, the curriculum is pretty much set. But, There are definitely ways to in include your own ideas and materials into it.

I wish I could take it, but I'm all the way over in the east coast. It's a long, expensive relocation move for me.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a High School English job and is willing to live in Arizona -- please refer them to Whiteriver Unified School District #20!! Thanks!

We've had yet another candidate turn down our offer. I don't know why no one wants to move to Arizona :)

The job is still available! PM me or ask here if you'd like more details!

Bumping again!!! I'm hoping that a really awesome teacher from "out east" who was waiting until Labor Day to see if they were offered a position hasn't found anything yet and is willing to relocate :) We are three weeks in to the school year and really need to find a good teacher for these kids!

Hey! I'm from Arizona and have always wanted to teach in a rural area. Unfortunately, I am finishing up my last semester of college (I graduate in December), so I can't take this particular job. I'll definitely spread the word that this is open, though.

Also, if the position is still open this coming January, can you let me know? I'd definitely be very interested. However I hope you have better luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

(I would have PM'd you this, but I am on a new account and for some reason they aren't letting me PM people ... I think I am having activation problems.)
