I thought it might be fun to hook up with other first year teachers in our grade level, and possibly in our geographic region. I haven't really thought about the logistics of it yet, it's just a hairbrained idea I came up with. If you're interested, post your grade leve, region (if you feel comfortable doing so), and date school starts. If you see someone you'd ike to communicate with, PM them and say hi! Eventually we might want to share email addresses and take things from there. I think it would be fun to share ideas over the summer, and have a soundboard if things get scary Who knows, we might make some cool new friends this way! Who's in? Grade 5 Eastern North Carolina (but I moved here from New England) School Starts on Aug 25, but we report on Aug 18. One more thing...let us know if you're on a year-round or traditional schedule. I'm traditional.
Ooooh, fun! I am on board for this! 7th grade Language Arts Atlanta area School starts on Aug 11, but I will report July 24.
Hi! I will be teaching 5th grade Social Studies in TN. We start the week of Aug. 7 for half a day, and then pick up the next week for full days.
5th grade (self-contained) North Texas August something Traditional schedule Nice to see some fellow Texans too--woo hoo!
3rd grade bilingual math & science Gulf Coast (I'm in Houston, school is 25 miles from here on the coast) Starts Aug. 26th, we report Aug. 19th
I'll be teaching 5th grade in West Tennessee. The students start back August 11... and I'm already nervous.
Right -- it's like, do we just walk up to the edge of the cliff and fall over, or do we run and jump? Either way, it's a scary drop. Our "hand-holding" via these forums really helps, though. It's not so scary when we are all jumping together
Be thankful you have some time to prepare. I was hired last year a week after school started. I started 2 days later. I had to jump right it and go with it. It was super scary but I learned SO much! Good luck!
Wow -- now THAT sounds scary! It also sounds like you did not really have time to think about being afraid -- you just had to go with it. Do you think it was actually better that way?
6th Grade Math IN August 13, but we report August 11th Traditional Thankfully, I did my student teaching in the fall and got to watch "The First Day of School" routine my cooperating teacher went through. But I'm still nervous about doing it on my own!
Can I join? This will be my second year at this grade level, but I still need all the help I can get. This year I taught a 4/5 combo, and it looks like I may do a combo again next year. Although, so far I have 22 5th graders. I am in Northern California.
7th grade math (I have taught one year prior, in 6th grade math) WA early September (the week of labor day) As I said, not totally new, but am starting a new job, after having a year of subbing again. I would love to talk with other middle school math people, share ideas and concerns.
I'm not a first year, but I've been out of the classroom for a while and it feels like my first year again! I'm in N. CA, too, Mrs. Bran. I'd love to meet up with other teachers up here to create and brainstorm. N. CA, Marin area 3rd Grade
I'll be teaching 5th Grade Science (just science) in north New Jersey Don't know my start dates yet... calendar hasn't been put up yet.
I'm in! This will be my 2nd year but still a new teacher and at a new school and district. I moved here from Michigan last year for teaching 5th grade at a small district. 5th grade (self contained instead of team teaching like last year) so it will feel like a first year again! North Carolina - Piedmont Region (Winston-Salem) School Starts on Aug 25 I will report Aug 18 Traditional School
South Texas Kindergarten School Starts Aug 25th This will be my 2nd year, but my first year fully certified.
I should hear back any day now if I will be hired to teach visual art this fall, students in 6-8 at a traditional public middle school. I will be in the western Massachusetts area, hopefully! I am not new to teaching art, but this will be my first time as a full-time teacher in a public school setting. We start professional development on Aug. 25 which runs for 3-4 days depending on the requirements that need to be met, then class begins on Sept. 5.
Aww man, I'm jealous. I would LOVE to teach art. I have a BA in visual art. So when I was doing my student teaching this spring in a k-2 class, guess what we did most of the time? Art projects. In fact, that's the first thing I went and bought. Paint. Ugh. I need to get over it.
Southern California 9th Grade English Start - Aug 11th I taught 2nd semester last year so this will be my first full year. I am still in the credential program
I will be teaching 7th grade math. I am a 46 year old brand new teacher, and I did my student teaching at the high school level, so I am pretty nervous about this!
Don't be jealous, you're the one with the real teaching job I know I should get certified in another specialty, especially with all the cut backs. Many of my friends in the field have special ed or art therapy with their BA. Recommendations?
Wha!? DUDE! You have a real teaching job! I would love to teach art all day. We'll swap. As far as recommendations for additional certifications, I'd say go with Sp Ed because it's pretty dang easy to get a job right now AND the kiddos rock.
Another first year 7th grade math teacher here! I start new teacher orientation Aug. 11th. All teachers report back Aug. 18th. Students' first day of school is Aug. 26th. What are y'all doing this summer to prepare? I've bought a few things to go along with my theme (beach/tropical). But nothing else. I have a $25 Mardel's gift card I want to use on July 17th (when everything is 20% off). I figure I'll get some posters on that day. Other than that, I don't know what else to do! Oh...I did begin working on my classroom website. It's kind of my hobby, so I couldn't resist jumping right in. Michele
