I am seeking a fellowship for next year as an alternative to traditional grad schooling. I have a lot of teaching experience with weekend and after school enrichment programs etc, but none in a formal, accredited school setting. My undergrad degree is not in education, and I'm eager to learn more theory. What are the standards right now in educational theory? What are the more tried and true texts (about the way students learn on a basic level), and what are more trendy, hot button books to read (about flipped classrooms, tech in schools, etc)? Looking for nonfiction books as opposed to a textbook or a how-to. I'm just interested in what's out there! If it's relevant, I teach late middle and high school English/Writing/Humanities Electives.

    HI and welcome!

I'm not sure of where to find the buzzwords and hot button books.

But for concrete information on what it's like teaching real kids in real classrooms, the best resource I can reccommend is right here at AtoZ.

Not a book about buzzwords, but Kozol's 'Letters to a Young Teacher' gives a glimpse into the life of a first year inner city teacher.

    Tim Elmore's "The iY Generation"
    Great insight into today's learner.

I have on my pile, but haven't read, yet "Teach like a Pirate." I've heard good things about it.

How about some practical books such as "The First Days of School" by Harry and Rosemary Wong, and "Tools for Teaching" by Fred Jones?

Teach like a Pirate is fantastic. I'd add Everything Bad is Good for You and The Essential 55. That's the 'starter pack' I recommend to all my student teachers.

I'd say stay far, far away from the educational blogs as they are filled with political whining that will not suit you well early on.

I personally dislike Harry Wong's writings, but I am probably in the minority.
