    Hey guys,
This is my first year teaching third grade. I would like the chance to move up to 4th and 5th grade at my school so that i can teach in my licensure area (4-9 social studies and language arts)
I have expressed interest to the other 4th and 5thgrade teachers and they seem excited. Now i just need to get the principal on board lol.

When is a good time to do this do you think?
My school is going thru ahuge transition as we are adding high school and our enrollment keeps going up.
Is just after christmas too early for this do you think?

It depends on when your principal starts to think about staffing for next year.

What I asked for a grade change I approached my principal in February because my colleagues recommended I ask early. My new principal sends around a form for everyone to fill in about their preferences for the next school year. I guess all of that to say, ask your colleagues. They know the timing and expectations in your school.

The other 4th 5th grade teacher suggested after christmas so i guess i can try then. I guess the worst that can happen is he says he will get back to me later in the year.

Personally, I completely agree to talking to your P early. I don't think you can ask too early. I switched from 3rd to 5th. I really loved 3rd grade, but I love 5th even more as teaching US History in 5th grade is so much fun. It is an enjoyable age too with the students.

Ha...this is so timely. I am not at all unhappy in my position, but I asked curiously about potentially moving back down to 4th since the opportunity might come up next year. My P totally avoided the question and said "You are such an asset and I have such great Special Education teachers!"

I think I predicted right when I said I might get pigeonholed in SPED forever!

Can you review the board minutes from previous school years and see when the board is presented with a staffing plan. Around here, staffing plans are presented in January and approved in Feb. which basically means that we talk with our principal about potential changes now.

I taught 1st grade my first year and really wanted to move up to 2nd grade. I spoke with my principal in Jan/Feb and knew in Mar/Apr that I was moving up to 2nd! :D

Express your interest early, but be prepared to give lots of great reasons why you'd like to move up! :2cents:

The earlier the better. Plant the seed now.

I regret not saying something earlier. I was in a meeting last April/May, maybe even in March, waiting for the parent to show up. I mentioned in passing that I would like to change positions, my P heard me. I didn't even think it was a possibility, plus I keep getting told that we are going to add a reading specialist position, I've been told that for a year now & that's really what I want to do.

My P & I talked about my switching grades in June & I said I would. By the time we talked, he'd moved a 3rd grade teacher down to 1st & hired a replacement. Then they departmentalized 2 grade & up. I'd only want to teach reading. I turned down the offer of 3rd grade math. In someways I really regret it. He knows I want to move.

I would suggest doing it after winter break, once the holidays are over and it's "back to work" time.
