It wouldn't fly at my school, parents would be taking their kids home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zrsl8o4ZPo
You all do know the video was from last February, right? It was part of the schools Black History Month activities. I think celebrating America electing its first African-American president is an appropriate activity for the month of February.
Hopefully the video is not a prelude to some state supported organization. If you recall there was a rather large one in the 1930's.... The members had to swear an oath that went something like this: "In the presence of this blood banner which represents our Führer, I swear to devote all my energies and my strength to the saviour of our country, Adolf Hitler. I am willing and ready to give up my life for him, so help me God." They also sang the Hitler Youth anthem..... But of course that could never, never, never happen again......... could it... Note: This is no way campares our leader with the German dictator.......
It was written by a teacher, not by anyone associated with Obama. While the teacher may be out of line, I don't think that this could ever, possibly be compared with the Hitler Youth, and to do so is completely alarmist and fear mongering.
It's a little early in the morning to try and start a bipartisan spitting contest, isn't it? I read some of the youtube comments and lost IQ points. Besides, "[insert politician here]=Hitler" is probably the weakest, laziest "debate" argument known to man. Whhhhy can't we all just get along.
BRAINWASHING! Funny that the second song they were singing is actually a hymn song that I know where one of the lines is "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah, Glory Glory, Hallelujah, Our Lord is marching on...". He has his accomplishments but I think its wrong that teachers push their political ideas on to children. Not everybody thinks he's #1 as the President.
Why is it that on every forum I frequent, the posters who have cool music tastes and express them through their screen name and avatar always seem to make the most sense?
Great. I hope my mom doesn't eventually hear of this video. That's all she needs to support her crazy ideas.
What is the backstory here? What kind of class? What was the occasion? Who wrote this, and how do we know? No, I wouldn't teach my kids this. I have issues with silly little assemblies during the day that take away from my teaching time though.
I recall singing about Amelia Erhart (sp?), "Yankie Doodle", and other historical figures in elementary school. My second grade teacher made up a song about how the United Postal Service, does this make her anti-privatization of shipping? Come on people! You are reaching here. Obama, has our first African American president has become a part of the country's history.
Indoctrination. the teacher should be reprimanded and the school should apologize. To the person who said above that it WAS appropriate, I beg to differ. There are plenty of things to do during Black History Month and singing a song that gives our president messianic qualities is not one of them.
I am wondering about this... if the song were about his PAST not his future, would it make a difference? For example, instead of saying he will fix this, he will fix that...If it said, "he overcame a hard childhood," "He knew he had to get a good education" and things like that? I worry about creating a song for someone who was so newly elected (this was Feb. right?) and I voted for Obama. If it was about his journey up until the election, would it be any different than songs about Rosa Parks or Columbus (whom we sing songs about at my school?) Our Rosa Parks song is very explicit in teaching what happened with her as civil disobedience, not just that she was tired and didn't want to get up (which is the real story) and our Columbus song is "Columbus didn't discover this place, 'cause someone was already here!" Some people COULD disagree with that. I was looking for the lyrics to the Rosa Parks song, but actually think one of OUR teachers wrote it... Anyway, that is liberal indoctrination, even though those things are TRUE they are not the stories children have been taught over the years.
