Are you allowed to wear jeans?

At my old school, it was unofficially not allowed. The P couldn't make an official dress code because then we would have had to have gotten a "uniform allowance."

At my new school, dress is very casual. Sometimes I feel over dressed wearing business casual clothes, and my old suits haven't been touched once.

 

I don't find it extreme or crazy. It sets a standard of respect for an academic institution. None of us are mad about it, so I don't know why you would be. Most slacks with pockets on the outside of the butt are made of thicker, more denim-like fabric. We can wear chino-style khakis, just not the more casual ones that look like jeans. I don't find the dress code to be overly prohibitive at all. We are modeling for our students how to dress professionally.

 

I have a hard enough time finding pants that fit me correctly without having to worry about my pockets!

It's not the IDEA that would bother me, but it would be nearly impossible for me to find pants! I think all of my pants right now have 'inside' pockets, but some of them have flaps.

 

I am surprised at some of these strict rules. I guess California is very casual. I'm pretty sure our union would have something to say about it if any administrator in our district tried to enforce a dress code.

Teachers can wear jeans, shorts, flip flops, pretty much anything. That being said, everyone in the front office wears dress slacks, dress shoes & tie/jacket (men) or dress/skirt/nice slacks with dress shoes (women).

I always dress business casual - skirt & jacket (not necessarily a suit), dress shoes, everthing ironed and matching. I never wear denim, t-shirts, or flip flops.

And although unspoken, I do believe we are judged on our professional dress.

 

The flaps are fine, as long as they look like dress pants and not like jeans. I have a few pants with the flaps, I just make sure they are always ironed down flat and are neat.

 

We can wear jeans on Friday with a school shirt, or any other day during the week with a jeans pass. You earn jean passes with perfect attendance, meetings, volunteering for PTA nights, etc. I personally wouldn't want to wear jeans everyday at work even if it was allowed. There's just something to be said about looking put together and professional, just my opinion.

 

I agree with that last sentence.

I know, for me, I FEEL different when I'm at work in button down shirts, slacks, and dress-work shoes than when I'm in jeans and a t-shirt. I feel more professional.

 

I get what everyone is saying about looking professional, but lots more companies in "industry" are going to casual attire and/or casual days. I don't think jeans necessarily means unprofessional. I've seen slacks, dresses and skirts that are anything BUT professional!

The district I worked this past year was very strict. No jeans or sneakers - ever. In fact, no denim of any kind so if we had post duty, they didn't want us wearing denim jackets either.

They also had a rule against open toe shoes, but everyone broke that rule once it started to get hot.

 

I really feel that I look more put together in a dark boot cut or trouser jean with nice shoes and a pretty top than I do in slacks.

When we got a new principal a few years ago, another teacher called me up one evening in a panic - "What if we aren't allowed to wear jeans anymore!?!"

 

Definitely agree with this one! I just know for me personally I tend to feel more confident and put together when I'm not in jeans all the time.

 

Fridays and field trip days only here

 

We do not have an official dress code. It was explained to me when I started that we could wear jeans on payday Fridays. It has evolved to every Friday or special day, field trips, etc. They try to do fundraisers before Christmas and at the end of the year for our staff flower fund. It used to be $1 per day to wear them, then changed to $15 for the month. I don't always pay because I often have meetings with parents and dress more professionally then. I won't pay $15 to only wear them 3-4 days. I pay $1 per day that I do wear them, as long as it isn't payday Friday. I don't think I should pay to do something I'm allowed to do all year. Sorry, personal rant...

I sometimes wish we had an official dress code because I tend to get sloppier with my dress without guidelines. I'm a rule follower so I'd definitely follow a dress code if I agreed or not.

 

Jeans Friday were BIG in my last district (can't speak for my new one yet.) We could wear them every Fri, and both my principals would give out jeans coupons for any day of your choice as prizes at staff meetings. I really hope jeans are okay on Fridays in my new school.

One of my principals said that if we looked appropriate for a bank teller job on casual Fridays then she didn't mind. It's a strange concept, but I thought it provided a good visual when getting dressed.

starting new school and I don't know if we are allowed to wear jeans - my contract says "professional dress" so I'm guessing no, and I LOVE wearing jeans. I always wear button up shirts but I also don't tuck in. I hope I can get away with pants and untucked shirts at new school. I try to dress up when meetings set with parents. (skirts - or more conservative slacks) I view that as a sign of respect - but honestly - I am the sloppiest person in world and jeans with button down is dressing up to me! I tend to kneel next to students, jump around, move a lot. I have what I call my teaching costumes!

I agree with this. Most of my jeans are dark and boot cut. I typically wear them with a dressy button-down top and it ends up looking nice. Dressy pants make my back side look a little bit too big.

 

My job is in special ed. We dress a lot more casually than the gen ed staff because of the physical demands. The teachers and paras often wear jeans throughout my district, especially when working with younger kids. Some even wear sweat pants, which I'm not personally a fan of, but I understand if you're constantly having to move and be spilled on in the younger grades.

 

Only on Fridays here, and I fear that will go away because some faculty think "jeans Friday" means "jeans and halter top Friday" or "jeans and the shirt I wore to paint the house Friday." I hate it when a small minority ruins it for the rest of us.

I wish we could, only because when i'm running some drama classes, I may be on the floor or climbing a ladder, or building a set or running a movement workshop, or something that would be much easier in jeans. I have asked permission, on the basis that the p.e. teachers can wear shorts and sweats since they need to be actively involved in their classes, but I've been told no. I've also asked if I can change for a class, and I'm told I can, but if a superintendent were to walk in and see me in jeans, I'd get a reprimand, regardless of reason, and I can't leave my class unattended to change--so I'd have to do it between classes--don't have that much time.

 

I would only wear jeans if I looked old enough to get away with it. I'm too baby faced to dress any more casually than not wearing a tie one day.

 

I wear Jeans everyday except for Friday... in which I usually dress in a suit as we encourage our students to dress professionally on Fridays.

 

No jeans and NO flipflop or "between the toe" type of shoes.

The kids have a dress code that we don't have to follow, it's encouraged but not required. When the kids balk, I tell them I'm dressed more professional then they are so people can tell I'm the teacher and they're the student. Nothing like being the same height as some kids and being mistaken as a student instead of the teacher.

 

So what do those teachers wear on 'non-jean days'? My feeling is that it's not a professional and polished look...

 

I honestly don't know what our official dress code is. I tend to dress in what I consider "business casual." I wear slacks & blouses mostly, although sometimes I'll throw a skirt into the mix. I rarely wear dresses - they just don't look right on me. My shoes are usually comfortable - Sketchers, New Balance tennis shoes, etc. - if I wear heels, they are almost always wedges. I'm not tall, so I wear wedges a lot, lol. I generally wear jeans & school shirt on Fridays. Sometimes (rarely) I will wear black jeans during the week, but that's it. There are other teachers who have problems dressing in what I think is an appropriate manner - one who wears track suits a lot, and she's not a PE teacher, another with cleavage issues.

Of course, we have a new principal this year, so EVERYTHING is up in the air at this point!

 

We have jeans Friday, and a lot of teachers wear what I would consider to be inappropriate. But, it's also a cultural difference and obviously everyone else is fine with it. I've seen teachers wear halter tops, tube tops, spaghetti strap shirts, off the shoulder shirts, see through shirts, club shirts, etc.

I usually wear jeans (the same pair every Friday, the only jeans I consider work appropriate) and a regular shirt. The most revealing I've ever gone is a tank top because it was just so hot today!!

 

Okay, a question about shoes. . . are peep toe shoes considered open toed shoes?

That's what I thought. I've hestitated to buy peep toed shoes as we can't wear open toed shoes.

 

That's the weird thing--those same teachers usually dress very professionally, but as soon as the word "jeans" is mentioned, they think the entire dress code goes out the window. That's why they'll probably get rid of our jeans day this upcoming year. I've already heard rumblings from several teachers.

 

We can normally wear jeans whenever we want; however, most of the staff wear professional clothes Mon-Thur and jeans on Friday.

 

I would die. Literally. I HATE shoes and rarely wear closed toed shoes!
My feet get hot and I get cranky.
I keep a pair of cheap Old Navy flip-flops under my desk all the time!

And on some Fridays, I wear them with jeans

 

We can wear jeans each Friday if we donate two dollars to Relay for Life. Most people wear them with a spirit shirt. I think we all look pretty nice on Fridays with everybody in school colors.

 

Jeans:

• With a school shirt/sweat shirt, etc. on second Friday of the month, which is Spirit Day.
  
• On fourth Fridays with a donation to whatever charity is chosen by the school
  
• Plus - for various special days such as class trips, field day, FFA week, etc.

 

We are not allowed to wear jeans at all, but they look the other way on spirit days, half days and staff training days. Our students are also not allowed to wear jeans except for special occasions.

 

This is my 20th year in the same district. Jeans were allowed anytime until two years ago. I don't like jeans that much anyway, so I didn't both me that much.

They did let us wear them on Fridays, but we had to pay $1 for charity. I don't care to pay the $1, but I think it's silly to think that they are unprofessional four days a week and not Friday. I didn't wear them at all the first year. I did some last year. At the end of the year we could pay $50 to tornado relief and wear them any day we wanted the rest of the year.

Other items on our "no no" list are flip flops, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, or anything that shows bellies or boobs. Men have to wear a collared shirt. Pretty logical, if you ask me. I did wear flip flops some, and I'd wear jeans some in winter. I never wore the other stuff anyway.

 

I ENVY YOU! Those shoes are gorgeous, I wish I could survive more than 10 minutes in heels!
