Jaime, that's actually really funny because of how true it is! I told my boyfriend that I'm going to go to bed before I kill him because I've already yelled at him twice and he hasn't even been home from work for an hour yet! Luckily he's outside working on his car right now. I'm just so sick of applying for jobs, going on interviews, waiting around to hear and then being turned down....or better yet, never hearing anything from the principals. The whole process is ridiculous. I just want to be done with it.
Me to. I was so tempted to write to the Gates today after watching Oprah. Telling them they should start their schools starting at the elementary level. And they should test run one in southern Maine LOL.
Beth, I'm so sorry you haven't heard yet - that is the hardest part! I'll be thinking about you tomorrow. I was talking to my principal about this kind of job stuff one day a few years after I was hired, and she said that hard as it is for us to believe, some principals just "forget" what the interviewing and waiting process is like, and calling people - even with good news! - isn't always their first priority.
It also does not help that Principals are swamped with their own things. For instance, in Texas they have state testing next week plus a lot of the budget stuff for next year that has to be ready to turn in soon. Add the teacher situation and you have some Principals that have a lot on their plate and of the things that need to be done telling teachers about a job that they didnt get is probably at the bottom of that long list. I am not saying that it is right but that is one thing to think about. I totally feel for you though. I would hate to be in that situation.
Beth, I'm so sorry for the agony you're going through, but just hang in there, you don't know for sure yet. I'm praying that the principal just got overwhelmed with work today and it didn't cross his mind. Also, Munchkin, my new job is for next year. Tomorrow is my last day at the school I'm at as a full time sub, it was mainly for the TAKS testing preparation. I'll just be "regular" subbing 'til school is out and then start in August. What you all are feeling is still so fresh to me and I'm still pinching myself to see if it's real. I did go and sign my contract yesterday though. That did help a bit. I'm praying you each will get to do that soon!
job postings Don't let online postings fool you. I sent out resumes to area schools, openings or not. I got called yesterday for an interview today for a job that is not posted anywhere. I think that happens a lot. It is my understanding that for a school district to comply with legalities on posting jobs, they can run a tiny ad in a newpaper 300 miles away and they have complied. Therefore, administrators have the upper hand. I may have heard wrong on that, but I know for a fact that jobs have been filled in my area that were never posted- at least not on the school's site.
I am sure this happens all the time. The districts around here do not accept mail in resumes/apps, everything must be done on line, then when they post jobs the paper work is to be mailed to the principals.
Ok here's the latest.... The teacher next door to me spoke with one of the teachers who was on the interviewing committee and apparently the committee turned in their 2 choices to the principal yesterday, but the principal hasn't notified anyone yet. From what I was told, he's actually considering maybe waiting until after vacation to tell people! I really hope not. From what he told me he wanted it all to be done today. We'll see, I guess!
That is good news! Sorry you still have to wait. He may be waiting due to something at the admin office, you never know.
Yeah, it made it feel a little better than no one had been notified yet and that it wasn't just me! I don't want to get my hopes up, though and be even more disappointed if I find out that I'm not one of the two that they chose.
Hi everyone, I hope you don't mind me butting in--I'm new to this site, although not to teaching. I taught HS math for 20 years before my 3 kids came along.I was math dept chair for the last 4. I've been a SAHM for 6 years, but it's time for me to go back to teaching... we just can't pay bills anymore on just my husband's teaching salary I've been reading all the posts. Beth, hang in there. This time of year is insane in administrative offices. It's entirely possible that something came up which just couldn't wait and he tabled the whole decision until after vacation. Texasaggie, consider what else you can coach. That's one way to find the job you want-- coach something that other people don't want to take on, either because it's time consuming (speech & debate, yearbook) or just a bit off beat (like crew or fencing or something) I've been sending out applications too, although I'm really hoping my old principal will find a math spot for me. It would be so comfortable, I could walk in and just start, you know?? If not, I'm hoping for some interviews after Easter. It will be a bit strange to be on the receiving end of the interview after having been chairman; I was the one doing the preliminary interviews during those last 4 years before the kids came along. I'm not terribly worried-- math is one of those subjects where jobs are always fairly plentiful. But I do have to figure out how to get my 2 older kids onto the bus, and find daycare for my youngest, so I would love to be settled ASAP Hang in there everyone. Someone is going to get those jobs, why not us???
I spoke with the principal this afternoon and I didn't get the job. I guess I wasn't one of the final two. Again, he ranted and raved about what a wonderful job I'm doing and how he'd love to have me there next year....apparently that does me no good, though. He's still got the two anticipated openings that I'll be applying for so we'll see.
Oh Beth, I am sorry. I am glad you talked with him, at least you know. It is so hard not to get excited about a job after interviewing, I don't think there is a way to prevent that. We all just have to keep trying. It will be your turn soon.

It's really hard not to get excited and get your hopes up. Not getting a job at a place where you work is not an easy thing either. My biggest concern about applying for the other two jobs is not getting it.....if I'm interviewed by the committee of 5th grade teachers again for those two and then don't get one of those either it's going to be really difficult for me to work with these people until June. I mean, obviously they have to choose the best qualified people, but it'll just make a very awkward situation for me.
You need a primal scream. Go grab your pillow or blanket, take a deep breath and SCREAM into the pillow or blanket. Just once, you might feel better. Get some if that frustration out. Hey maybe I will do the samething. Can you ask any of the 5th grade teachers for their opinion on what may have been questioned or maybe you did not get a chance to clarify yourself, in your interview? You may have said everything just right, but someone else said it a little better. I see where teaching the rest of the year could be difficult if it does not work out.
Thanks everyone. I just hate this whole process. I want a job so badly and starting of the "interview season" this way really doesn't make me very confident that I'll find one. Give me a day or two and I'm sure I'll feel better about this, but right now I'm just bummed! Hey, maybe over vacation I'll hear something from the other school I interviewed at...a girl can dream, right?
wow beth, that stinks a lot. the thing is, if your principal thinks you're so wonderful and doing a great job, i can't imagine he'd even have the heart to not give you one of the other 2 anticipated jobs. like you said, it's the start of interview season and you've already got plenty of experience and some nerve-wracking interviews under your belt, i have no doubt you'll get a job. (and i have no doubt it will be with the school you currently work at)
She told me that she didn't have a timeline and that'd I'd hear either way so I really don't want to call just yet. If I haven't heard anything by the beginning of May or so I'll probably call, but it's only been a little over a week.
The thing is, he gives most of the power to the committee. They narrow it down to two people and then he chooses from those two. If I'm not one of their two choices, I'm out of luck! Hopefuly I'll just end up being on of the finalists next time!
Beth, you know one thing that is really common in our district, but stinks????? The really excellent long term subs have a hard time securing a fte position in the district because they are too valuable as subs! Stupid, huh? I hope you aren't in that same boat!
I hope not too! I'm applying everywhere, though so hopefully if that is the case I'll just end up with a job elsewhere.
I am sorry to hear that. I am suprised that the other teachers haven't rung that Principals neck by now..but alas I dont see anything on CNN Keep your head up though you will find a place and not only a place but a great place to learn, grow, and be successful. I had a very productive day today. I KNEW it was going to be a good interview when I walked in and started really getting along with the secretary staff etc. I had one of the student office aides interviewing me about whether she would want me as her teacher or not (I passed, even though she refused to look at my portfolio). The interview went really smooth as well. All of the questions they asked were things that are my strong point. The only thing that may keep me from getting this job is that I do not have any experience in coaching FOOTBALL! I can coach the pants off of anyone in basketball, track, cross country, tennis, and soccer but football is king in Texas and I do not have any experience coaching the game. I did get asked why they should pick me over someone that had more experience and I told them that experience and knowledge was the easiest thing to gain. I care about the students and experience can't teach that (They liked my answer and said that it was very commendable). *prays* This is my dream job...now I have to write three thank you letters and have never written one after an interview...any guidence is greatly appreciated.
kinderkids, the info about the good subs not getting contracts because they are good- I think its just about one of the best kept secrets in Educational HR there is!! It goes triply true if you're a sub in special ed and want to get out of special ed!! Man, those special ed superintedents have a disgusting long memory!! I was a 8.5 month long sub for an aide in an Emotional Disturb class, told the principal repeatedly I do NOT want to stay in special ed, I am doing this until I can get a teaching contract or another long term in your school with regular ed kids or get a contract to teach in another school somewhere in the district. She promised me repeatedly that I would get the next available LT in the school as a regular ed teacher..... NOPE!! That one was offered to her best friend and that woman didn't stay even two days before she just didn't show up to teach several days in a row without calling. Man this politic stuff just sucks!!!
Someone told me instead of calling because the principals and superintendent's office gets a lot of calls, to email stating "I decided to email you because I know you are busy and getting a lot of calls at this time." or something like that. Just lost my train of thought. Oh well.

Hey I am getting frustrated too! Hey everyone, I am new to this site but I read all of your posts and seems like we are all in the same boat. I am from NJ and I am looking to relocate to GA. I went to a job fair in my area and met with the school district i am really really interested in. I interviewed with a principal from a highschool down there and he said he was really impressed with me and i am the kinda of person they are looking to hire, he said he would take my resume back with him and make sure the right people saw it. From what i could tell i was the only person who had come to see him. He said for me to go and email all the principals in his district that i was interested in working at send them my resume and cover letter and apply for my GA lincense which I have done all of this right after he told me to. I didnt hear anything for a week, so then I sent all of the principals again another letter with my resume, cover letter and references I mailed about 8 of them out. I did the whole online application thing for the district back in Jan and they approved all my documents including my lincense, then I sent the packet of info out to them they requested. I am just wondering what my next step is i really really want to teach in this district and i want to land a job for Sept. I am hoping i hear something soon because i need to move down there and find somewhere to live. I am thinking of contacting the principals by phone, any advice on what to say?? I will keep everyone posted in my job search by the way i put in for 1st and 2nd grade positions. SOrry so long but this is my story! -Jill
I would contact them by phone. My principal seems to only hire people he meets in person. We have a lot of new teachers at my school this year from Michigan, Chicago and NY but they were all hired at job fairs or sent their resumes in but had a teacher at the school vouch for them. Have you thought of maybe setting up appointments to meet with the principals and fly down to meet with them or even attending a job fair in Georgia.
I would love to fly down there and meet with the principals, I am just waiting for them to call me so something can be set up. I mean the recuriter who i met with at the job fair here in my area he is a highschool principal down there he said he would take my resume and make sure the right people saw it, so i am thinking that maybe he will vouch for me i dont know. Then again they had spring break and this was their first week back so i am hoping maybe i will here something back maybe next week???? I am told they have testing next week so i will wait till the following week and call, I dont know what to say to them any advice??? I dont want to just move down there to sub, i need a job because i will need to support myself. -Jill
Oh Beth, I am so sorry you didn't get the position.:sorry: YOu're still in the running for the others though, right? And it goes through a committee? Are there any recommendations that they could make that they want to see from you, but somehow were just to blind and just didn't see? Sometimes, the committee or the principal is willing to give tips. The brave ones that is. But on the other hand, if God doesn't want you there, this may be the gentle way of saying, "hey, I got other plans, bigger plans, for you." :sigh: Sorry you had to wait so long. Will keep my fingers for you crossed that you will get a positive response for one of the other positions. Good luck.

I don't think my not getting the job had anything to do with me. There were just people with more experience who also interviewed. For example, I know that one of the candidates was a spec. ed. teacher from the middle school.
Jill: Hound that principal who said he was interested! He may very well be busy with end of the year testing, report cards, and definitely he's busy with the contract renewals. This is the time frome right now in this area that all contracts are due. The schools usually require them to be back signed from the teachers by the 15th of April, so they can have time to do the reviews, and interview of replacements before they submit them to the district's HR department. Then theres the budget renewal time which can take anywhere from 1 week to 3 monthes to decide. (depends on if they are asking for a tax hike in their particular area. Or if they have the money for a expansion on their staff hiring available.) Thats where I am at too, Jill. Hang in there, but be persistant. The school will hire the most qualified sometimes, but definitely the one's who are most persistent and show enthusiasm toward the job have a better chance than someone who just leaves a resume with a recruiter that may have 20-100 candidates that he's representing.
