I just planted FIVE apple trees in my yard! I used instructions from Dave Wilson nursery on Backyard Orchard Culture. Yes, home-grown apples may be smaller, but they will be so much fresher and delicious! One thing I learned is that it's actually better not to put too much fertilizer (nitrogen) on fruit trees, since this causes foliage growth and not larger fruit. Google Dave Wilson Backyard Orchard Culture for more info.

Depending on your location, Honeycrisp is a good varietal that produces large, delicious fruit and is very disease and cold-tolerant.

It will take 3+ years to get to full harvest, but our eventual goal is to make our own cider!
