I was asked to teach AP English to 11th grade students next year. I read some sample syllabi and the AP course descriptions, but both my colleagues and I can't decide on the best class:

    English Language and Composition
    English Literature and Composition

We do offer CAP English to 12th graders, but here in NY the 11th grade course load can be heavy for those planning on college.

Would students be best served by reading and critiquing literature?

Would students be best served by learning to write in non-literary formats?

Thanks for sharing your experience and expertise!

I don't teach AP, but at my school 11AP is Lang and 12AP is Lit.

There's a big push for kids to work more in expository formats for college. Out here the Cal State system developed an expository curriculum that has been adopted by many districts as a stand-alone 12th grade English course. Others, like mine, have divided the modules among all four grade levels so that all students are getting more experience in critical reading and expo comp.

Yeah, so...the superintendent just presented to our school board that it is necessary to cut 11 teaching positions and told the principal that an AP class is not a good idea right now...district needs to save 1 million dollars because of realistically anticipated education cuts here in NY...

Bummer, but not at all surprising.
