I am interested in doing this as an extra to make a bit of extra money. Anyone here have experience with this kind of thing? I know it might be hard because of not being able to teach during the day time.
I teach one class off and on (in alternating summers) at the local community college for Linear Algebra or Differential Equations. I make okay money and I enjoy teaching higher level math, which is my primary motivator. I highly recommend it if you have the time.
I taught a few semesters, but the pay wasn't worth it....at all. I actually found the pay somewhat insulting given how much students are charged for the classes. I make signficantly more tutoring after school instead, and the commute is nicer.
True, I did it mainly because I wanted to teach those aforementioned classes, haha! I only made like $3,000 for the whole summer.
Yeah, I taught college precalc, and my precalc students in college were SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than my high school precalc students. Some of them had trouble with basic arithmetic. It made me more appreciative of the students in my district as I don't know how some of the kids in this college graduated HS.
Wow! That’s deeply troubling that students are just being passed through the system and they still can’t do basic arithmetic. I think it is inexcusable to pass a student into higher-level math who hasn’t mastered the basics.
I did it as a graduate student. The pay was sad, but it does give the opportunity to teach classes you might not get to teach normally. Plus no helicopter parents or behavior issues is a plus.
The only bad part is I'm not sure what I would teach. I have a masters in Educational technology curriculum and instruction. Not a masters in a subject or content necessarily. I think most teaching classes are during the school day usually.
I did, for several years. I teach Dual Enrollment now at my high school, so it is the same class I was teaching at the community college, but more pay. The pay was abysmal, I made 1200 for an entire semester. The workload wasn't much, and I did enjoy teaching the class. For the most part, the students want to be there, so there's much more participation, etc. However, I noticed my weakest students were the ones that were 5 years or less out of high school. Many of them struggled with even the basics, while my older students, many of whom had never set foot in a college classroom, excelled at everything. It is very clear that the expectations for graduating high school are not what they were. We have definitely dropped the standard of education.
