HI, I have never sent an actual business email and am wondering if I follow the same exact format as a paper copy of a cover letter. I am sending a follow-up email after submitting snail mail documents. Can I start it Dear Mr. So and So: and end with Sincerely? Is there a correct email format or is it standard business format with the name address and all at the top? Do I even leave the 4 spaces after the Sincerely and then my name? I of course have snet tons of emails but just not a formal business one before. thanks for any help on this.

    Dear Tripletsteacher,

Use the same format as you would in a standard letter. You just don't need to leave so many line spaces between the Dear John and the body nor the Sincerely and your name. I would say leave 1 or 2 spaces. This note has one space in between paragraphs, at the opening, and at the closure.

Keep in mind that, in email, paragraphs can look real long and be hard to read. You may want to break them up if possible.

    Sincerely,

    Souptunuts

    I agree with souptonuts.

Don't focus so much on the formality. Get to the point and be concise. That's all there is too it.

I have never put a header on. I figure if I'm emailing it to that person it goes directly to them and so it won't be opened by mistake by someone else. I usually start with
    Dear so and so....

But I don't know if I am doing it right.

I think the point is .... that you are talking to another person, just because they happen to be a principal does not make it any different than emailing another professional. As long as your sentences are correct and spelling is too, I think that's all that really matters.

    Why do we torture ourselves?

I have no idea. But I went and ordered 500 books. Do you know what it is like to stamp the school name twice in every book!
I need to get on sending out more packets.
