We missed today due to the snowstorm that is hitting the Midwest. There is also a question as to how many more days we'll miss later in the week. When the wind chill hits -35, there is concern about the large portion of our students who must stand out and wait for buses.

Our schools were cancelled last Wednesday and Friday due to the ice and freezing temps.
We might be closed Tuesday-Thursday this week for the low temps as well... We'll see! (We were open today. 30+ degrees).
Plus the storm back in November, we've had 3 snow days this year already.

We are open normal today, but the district closest to the east of us has already called 2 hour late starts for the next 3 days. Our administration hasn't made a decision yet. We have had 1 school cancellation this year so far and it was a week ago last Friday when we closed for the crazy amount of influenza and strep in our elementary.

We've been having the same conversation. That wind is absolutely brutal and we have to take into account that most of our student population rides the busses to school. Their safety has to be a top priority.

I'm out tomorrow due to the potential snow and the fact that southerners can't function on the roads in snow. LOL

We had school today, but tomorrow isn’t looking good. We have minimal snow-removal equipment and workers plus a lot of curvy mountain roads. A little snow goes a long way keeping us out of school.

We really need time to get over sickness. We have mono, flu, and a stomach bug going around. I had 16 of my 80 kids out today. Most days I have 2 or 3 out, if that.

We had school and absolutely should not have. I'm used to driving in snow. I've gotten 2 snow days in 9 years of teaching. This morning was like nothing I've ever experienced. Before I went to bed, which was around midnight, I checked the weather and it said we'd get around one inch. So I didn't even plan to leave early. In the morning I thought it looked worse outside but naively assumed things must be better more toward my district neighborhood.

We ended up getting 8-10 inches over the metro area and they were 100% unprepared. They did absolutely nothing to the roads. No plowing whatsoever. Honestly had I realized how bad it was I would have stayed home. By the time I realized it truly wasn't getting any better, it made more sense to keep going than turn around.

My 20 minute commute took about 90 minutes. There were wrecks all over the place. On the radio they kept talking about how bad it was and urging people to stay home. Only about half of our kids showed up, and 90% of them live within 2-3 blocks of the school.

It wasn't just my district- not a single metro area district closed. I don't know if they also just went off of the light forecast or thought it was too late or what. Someone commented- were they all waiting for someone else to close first, and then nobody did? Luckily I made it unscathed, but I am still unhappy about being put in that position. Next time my district decides to ignore really dangerous conditions, I will make my own snow day! I have emergency sub plans should a sub decide they want to risk it and go in.

My commute on the way home at 5 PM was the lightest it's ever been, so there were obviously a whole lot of people in other fields who got to stay home today.

I am SO glad I live in California. I have no idea how you people deal with these subzero, frigid conditions and unrelenting snowstorms!

Our district already closed schools on Wednesday. Even if it warms up, it'll still be below zero. And then add the wind chill? They're saying frostbite can occur within 5 minutes on Wednesday

Well, we didn't get any snow at my house, but we did get a snow day in the county. It is either for black ice or parts of the county got snow. The storm track was splitting the county, and we are dealing with around 250 square miles. The counties to the east and south of us are all out too, but the ones to the north and west are not.

My DH works in the district directly to the west, and he has school today. He also has parent conferences tonight, so it will be 8 before I see him tonight.

My district is rural and we face the same situation. I have only been to work 1 day and that was last week - and it turned into an early out day! Just got word last night the earliest I go back is Friday.

I giggled at your paper snowflakes post on FB.

I made a trip to town to pay DSS's car taxes and then went to the next town on a Hobby Lobby run. After some work in the office with my Cricut, I'm going to enjoy the recliner and TV.

We had about 7" of snow between early yesterday afternoon and this morning. Main roads were plowed before rush hour, but side streets weren't and our school parking lot hadn't been cleared when I arrived just after 7:00. We're running "business as usual" today, although I do have 9 students who decided to stay home today.

We had school today but had a snow day last Wednesday due to snow and tomorrow for extreme cold.
What's funny is that I'm supposed to be leading part of our Wednesday PD and it's been put off twice now due to snow days. I'm ok with it.

Our frigid weather continues--we are open and our buses are running. I have been missing close to a third of my class the past two days and expect the same today.

We had Tuesday and Wednesday off. We went back 2 hours late today, but the air temp was still -35 when I got to school at 9:15 this morning. We are up to -18 now.

DH and I both have been off the past two days. Technically he hasn’t missed any days because they have non-traditional days. He has to be available to kids via email during school hours, and the kids do work online. Hopefully we will be back to work tomorrow.

I did get the house cleaned and some crafting done.

We don't have snow days but more kids are missing school lately because of some bug going around. I had to stay home one day last week because I think I had a minor case of whatever they had! I really hate when people send their kids to school SICK and then we end up getting sick. I can't wait until this "sickness" season is over!!

Our buses were cancelled today because of a forecast ice storm. Things haven't really gotten started yet, so most of our students are here. Driving home today could be a bit dicey if we do get the freezing rain for several hours and tomorrow morning could be an adventure.

Tomorrow is our third snow day in three weeks. I'm ok with it just because I can catch up on sleep, but I'm starting to worry I won't be able to go to a conference I was looking forward to if we have to make up snow days at the end of the year...

I grew up in the mountains of the northeast. We had to stand and wait for buses in below 0 temperatures. I don't envy any of you and nothing could get me to move back to that type of climate. Everyone, just stay warm and safe!

what happens if you end up having 15 days of school closure? Would the school stay in session that long to make up those days? (that's 3 weeks into the summer)

We were just informed today that teachers will have to for sure make up any days missed, but students won't have to come back after Memorial Day unless it is for a minimum of 3 days. We had 2 days off 2 weeks ago that our governor said he will deduct from minimum time requirements if it comes to that, but final decision on whether they get made up is at the discretion of our school board. We already have a day added (supposed to be a day off) in March from when we cancelled due to a crazy amount of kids with influenza and strep.

I am so glad I don’t have to make up any days missed at my school, as we are private. And I’m looking to my up-and-coming 4-day weekend in honor of President’s Day. :D
