I didn't, but my son's Kindergarten teacher did. She stayed the whole year as his K teacher then got a contract for 1st grade in the district. One of my former co-workers did two years in a row LTS for two different leaves and got a contract for this year.

I did. I was a LTS for the same teacher for 1.5 years. When she finally resigned, I was automatically given the job. :)

There is a teacher in my building who was a LTS in K and then did a year in 2nd (also LTS) and is now under contract in the same 2nd grade room.

Actually, now that I think of it - there is another one in my building. She was the LTS for the 2nd grade for the actual maternity leave and was hired for the next year (so they had to bring in the other woman for the year long LTS).

I did a leave that became a probaitoany postion!! However, it is a gamble, I know people who have been on leaves for years and years and still have nothing. A lot has to do with timing, and numbers.

I did a couple maternity leaves and it got the principal to know me. So I finished off the year when another teacher left to move out of state. They happened to have an opening the next year and I was hired. In my district it is a lot of who you know gets you a job! Good luck!

I did 2 maternity leaves (once for 3 months, the other for 9 months) and then the principal recommended me for a permanent position with the board. At the school I am at now, we have hired at least 3 long-term subs to permanent positions in the past 3 years.

Kind of... I was a long-term substitute during a maternity leave. Because I impressed the principal, he recommended to another principal for a full-time position in her school. He told me after I had interviewed and had gotten the offer that he told her... I have the perfect person for you. Bless his soul!!!

That is how my mom got her job. She was a LTS for a person out on Medical leave. Which was only supposed to be 30 days or so, it turned into almost the whole year. WHen the teacher retired at the end of the year-my mom got the job! The principal really liked her...
    Good Luck!! :)

I have heard of a few people who left on maternity leave and then after the baby was born decided to breast feed and realized that it would be easier to take the year off and did so. I don't know about New Jersey though.

I took a year off when my first daughter was born. The woman who took my position that year was assured I would not be back (don't know how they could predict that!). Well, it turned out I was not a good candidate for being a SAH mom and returned to school the following year. The person who had my position simply got shuffled to another open position, one she prefers because it is all social studies and no LA. It can work out!

I was hired as a year-long LTS for a maternity leave. Halfway through the year, the teacher resigned and moved out of state, so I was immediately put on a temporary contract. At the end of the year, I was given a permanent position! In California, Ed code states that any temp or LTS who works more than 75% of the school year has hiring rights before positions are posted to the public. My union rep really looked out for me, making sure I new my rights. So check your state's ed code. It worked out for me! And I'm still there!

I was hired from my LTS position, but not for the grade I was teaching. One of the first grade teachers was hired to replace the teacher she subbed for. Same with a third grade teacher. Another first grade LTS has been offered a position, but may have a better job somewhere else.

I was offered a job toward the middle of my student teaching and right out of college to take over a maternity leave the last 6 weeks of school and was offered a position for the following fall before the year was up. I stayed at that school for 4 years then moved to my current "dream school" job two years ago. I'm starting my 3rd year here and I love it!!

I took a one year position for a teacher on a leave. Her baby was 9 months old, but she also had a 2 year old and a 4 year old. The third baby was an "oops" and she took a year off to stay home with the 3 of them...and decided to stay home, much to my luck. I found out in May that the job was mine :).

I finished out the year for a Title 1 Reading Specialist. At the end of the year I was offered a kinder position for a retiring teacher.
