Any thoughts on this pencil sharpener?

    Hello all,

I did a Google search for "best pencil sharpener" and this came up.

    http://www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com

I thought I had read on this forum a few years ago that people were pleased with it.

Just wondering if you had any thoughts, as I'm tired of going through electric pencil sharpeners each and every year! :)

A fellow teacher has one of these. After a very short while, it barely works. That's the only feedback I have on it.

I have one and love it... there are three factors to think about with it though...

    1) It takes some time to train the kiddos to use it. It works differently from most pencil sharpeners
    2) It doesn't do well with colored pencils. Without fail, every time somebody tries to use a colored pencil, it ends up jamming, and I have to take it apart, take a pair of scissors, and pop the lead out.
    3) The blades do wear out fairly quickly (I find my kiddos go through about one new set per year).

And with the colored pencils... it won't be obvious that it's jammed. It'll still turn and look like it's sharpening... it just won't sharpen anymore.

But for all it's idiosyncrasies, I do love it. It gets (regular) pencils sharp very quickly, it's quieter than most sharpeners, and there's never a problem with having broken lead.

I just think that using good pencils is key no matter which sharpener you get. I swear by Ticonderoga.

Never put colored pencils in any electric pencil sharpener. I tell my kiddos they have to use their personal hand held sharpeners for colored pencils. :2cents:

I have tried that sharpener. It broke within months of normal usage by 5th graders.

I have had mine for three years. I love it. I was going through one or two electric pencil sharpeners a year...my last one had cost over $100. In fact I regularly find my missing...my neighbors borrow it all the time. I actually got a present of a new one in May. The gentleman will exchange it if it breaks if you contact him. A friend's didn't work...or so she thought. I was playing with it and discovered that it had a knick in the blade. I think a child stuck a pair of scissors in it. He replaced it.

I have one and I love it. After half a year of use, it did start to wear down in its ability to give nice sharp points, but I had my husband sharpen the blade. (I also just observed this site gives you the option of purchasing a replacement blade. I like that.)

I'm considering buying a second one so I can have multiple pencil sharpening points. I recently received two free pencil sharpeners (one electric and the other manual) so I'll see how long those last.

I guess I'm at peace with the idea no pencil sharpener is forever.

As for the kiddos... I set this out with full intentions of officially training the kids but before I could do so a couple kids were experimenting with it and passing along the knowledge and next thing I knew the entire 2nd grade class could use it just it just fine. Kids can be pretty sharp that way.

Also, I made a rule about no colored pencils. I plan to just buy a handful of the little handheld colored pencil sharpeners because I've yet to meet a bigger sharpener that can handle colored pencils.

I went through two of those in a year before I gave up on electric pencil sharpeners forever. Third graders seem to break electric sharpeners like it's their job.

It also has a 10 year guarantee.

Thank you all for your input! :)

I did see the X-acto sharpener and might give that a try. A 10-year warranty is nothing to sneeze at!

One thing I've found that helps an electric sharpener last is to NEVER sharpen colored pencils in it (the leads are too soft, and they gunk-up the blades) and to not let kids sharpen "fancy" pencils in it...you know, the glittery, sparkly, or fancy-coated ones.

If they just stick to plain old pencils, they last quite a while.

Ditto on the advice about colored pencils. I have older students and I have told them if I even SEE a colored pencil headed in my direction, it is an automatic write-up. I have had this one from Staples for four years, and it has taken a beating, but kept right on sharpening pencils the entire time. Down side, for the youngest grades, is that we are talking use with traditional sized pencils, so not good for K and 1st.

I have two like FourSquare and Rainstorm have. One survived two years and the other has made it through one. If they make it through this year, I will be a fan forever. I've never had one last three years!

    Agreed.

One of the hats I wear as AP is "Site Testing Coordinator." Anyway, I always provide a class set of sharpened pencils inside the teachers' testing tubs. This is the device my secretary uses to sharpen hundreds (possibly thousands) of pencils each year for testing! I also used this particular sharpener as a classroom teacher! Two thumbs up!
