I teach a computer lab (Grades 1 to 6). I put headphones on the teacher supply list but often kids don't come in with headphones (or come in with very cheap dollar store ones that instantly break). I've purchased a few back ups headphones to help out.. The only good headphones I've ever used cost $10 or more and I can't afford many of those. All the bulk brands you get from places like Amazon, seem to be absolutely horrible and only last a few weeks to a few months. Many of the customers in the reviews claim some of the headphones arrive and don't work at all. Has anyone purchased inexpensive headphones ($1 to $3) that have lasted all year?
I have my students bring in headphones. Most choose earbuds. I ask parents if anyone wants to bring in an extra set, it would be much appreciated. Usually I get a parent or two who does this. This helps to cover most of the students who don't have much money. I then pick up a pair or two of earbuds, but rarely need to buy more than that. I use to get earbuds for $5. Now it is tougher to find them at that price. The key is to encourage the kids to consider getting different ones than the dollar store ones.
@readingrules12 Do the $5 Earbuds last the entire year? I've never found any good headphones or earbuds at Dollar Stores. A lot of audio items at Dollar Stores seem build to be disposable (bad sound and break easily)...even the crayons there are terrible.
Have you heard of Woot? They have great audio deals sometimes. They were better before they got bought out by Amazon though. The catch is that what they have is what they have, but stock changes every day. If you don't need them NOW, you could wait and catch a deal on nicer headphones. They have JVC, Skullcandy, Gumy, and Sony fairly often in the neighborhood of $5. As long as the kids don't pick at the pads and are kind to the cords, those will last.
@viola_x_wittrockiana Thanks, I'll give it a try. ($5) is as high as I'd like to go. 48 computers in my room (I get 2 classes at a time). Note: I tried $5 and Below stores, but those things seem very cheap (fall apart within a few months) I've purchased over a dozen Koss UR10 in the past. ($10). They seem to hold up for 1 year. before one side no longer has audio or part of the plug starts to shred. Koss has a slightly cheaper version of the UR10 (ED1TC Hb) (that doesn't have padding over the ear part.) Those things seem very uncomfortable to wear, but are easy to clean. Sony ZX MDR-ZX110 were the best choice I found for $10, but last week the price spiked up to $12.99
Look for over-ear headphones that offer good sound quality at a lower price point. Brands like Sony and JBL often have affordable options with decent audio performance. In-ear headphones, also known as earbuds, can be very budget-friendly. Brands like Skullcandy and Panasonic offer affordable in-ear models that provide decent sound.
