For a back-to-school bulletin board idea, I was going to take a picture of the kids and put it against a FB or Instagram sort of template, and maybe have the kids write about their summer, or what they look forward to in the third grade. This is simply for the bulletin board; it isn't in any way online... but in this hypersensitive culture, am I overlooking any potential objections (i.e. that parents might have) in something like this?

You may not get any objections, and it is a cute idea. However, your students are all too young to have accounts on those sites and I wonder if the bulletin board display may send the message that it's okay.

Get the parents' permission before you take or use students' photos. CYA!

Could you do something similar to those themes, but without referencing the social media? For example, instead of doing an "Instagram" theme, just have them create / bring a picture that you put in a camera or frame shape? Instagram probably won't be nearly as known, and even though Facebook will be more known, with either, it seems as though you could avoid any possible issues yet still maintain your end goal.

I did an iPod theme for a BTS bb a few years ago. They set goals on a page that looked like an iPod.. "my playlist for this year"

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the bulletin board idea.
