In maths, is it necessary for students to give their answers in full sentences? Or is it acceptable to just provide the answer. I am creating questions based around interpreting data. E.g.

Question: What is the difference between the amount of red lollies and green lollies?

There are 2 more red lollies than there are green.

I realize that I'm in secondary and you're elementary.

But my rule is that the answer should be in the same form as the question.

So a verbal problem is answered in a grammatical English sentence. An equation is answered with an equation.

If not a complete sentence, at least 'labeled'... 2 more red lollipops.

I always ensured they had enough room to write the full sentence out. That way we are working on their math skills and integrating English as well.

This is a very old thread! Oh, how I miss Alice! Not sure why the above member partially restated Alice's response?
