There have been lots of questions about iTunes lately. Here's another one. :)

Does iTunes remember what I've purchased? If so, how do I access that stuff?

I recently got a new computer. When I loaded iTunes and entered my account information, there wasn't anything there. It didn't remember any of my purchases of apps, podcasts, or songs. I have the files on my old computer and I'll load them manually if I have to. I was just thinking that iTunes should have some sort of record tied to my account, shouldn't it? I mean, if iTunes doesn't know what I've purchased and my computer blows up and I lose all those files, are they just gone forever?

There's a few files that manage your account....is it too late to have your files transferred over? Where is your library saved?

My library is fine and I have all the files on a portable hard drive. I was just thinking more along the lines of 1) ease of transfer and 2) what-ifs. I feel like if I purchase something through iTunes, there should be some sort of catch in place in the event that my computer or phone goes kaput. So that's why I was surprised to log in to my iTunes account and see nothing there in the "Purchased" section.

First what type of computers? Are they both PCs or both Macs if they are one of each it is a little more work.
Get a thumb drive (flash drive) and transfer the music files to there, then plug in to the new computer and transfer the music files to the new computer if you are using the same iTunes account (up to 5 computers) iTunes will "see" them and load them

EDIT just transfer the songs over from the portable.

Just use the iTunes preferences and assign a location to keep the library

    I don't think I'm being clear.

I know how to import my stored music files into iTunes.

My question is can I redownload purchased items from iTunes without having to pay for them a second time?

You need to authorize the new computer, Caesar. If memory serves, iTunes allows you to authorize up to five computers on your account. The last time I did something like this was a while back, but try searching for "authorize" in iTunes's Help.

Caesar we have had several computers since we started our itunes acct and seems like all our music popped up on the new computers when we logged into our acct. There is the Advanced tab something about "homesharing" if I remember correctly.

Where I ran into the biggest problem was in connecting my iPhone to my computer for the first time. Because iTunes didn't see any of the apps I had downloaded, when I went to sync my phone it erased them all. I had to go find them all again and redownload them again. It was a hassle and it was only a dozen or two apps. It got me thinking that if I had to redownload all my songs again, that would be hundreds or thousands of songs, it would take a long time, and I'll be seriously upset if I have to pay for them all again.

Mine didn't do any of that, and I did check the homesharing option. It was like I had to start completely over.

I thought I got a message several months ago stating that iTunes would no longer maintain purchases and for that reason each user should create a back-up disc. Does that make sense to this discussion?

Yes it does. That seems to be why my purchases didn't automatically pop up.

Any ideas about how I might find out? I don't see anything in the App Store that gives me what I'm looking for either. :(

My iCloud saves my contacts, bookmarks (only with IE, though....Who even uses that??), mail, calendar, and photos. It doesn't seem to have an option to save my songs or podcasts.

OK---my question...I have an ipod for my teenager, an ipad for my husband, and an ipad for my husband's school. They share an account. I want to download some of the items (songs and videos) that I bought to my daughter's Polariod MP3 player. It will let me download old things from several years ago, but not any of the new stuff. It says it is 4G and can't translate. Help! Can it be done?

You need to download an mp4-mp3 converter. Itunes files are mp4s not mp3s.

Update! I was able to locate all my downloaded apps, music, and books! In iTunes, click on the iTunes Store. Then on the right side menu click Purchased. Everything that you've downloaded in iTunes will appear and you can redownload it. Yay!

I'm still trying to figure out how to set up homesharing and the cloud. Any tips on that?
