Another name for homework quiz?

    Hey all!

I give my math students a homework quiz every Friday to ensure that they've been doing/understanding their homework. Last year, my students would freak out because of the word "quiz". It really is more of me giving them problems very similar to their homework that was assigned that week to make sure that they were actually doing it and not just rushing through to get the points.

Does anyone have a suggestion for what I could call this rather than a homework quiz? Perhaps just a homework check?

Any ideas would be appreciated! :)

I would make it more of a challenge or award type assignment....call it "Math student of the week" or "Homework Master", etc. Make it more of a challenge rather than a quiz...

    Homework Assessment
    Weekly Skills Check
    Weekly Understanding Assignment
    "My Week in Review"
"Huh, what? Homework?!" (For a bit of humour...)

Those just off the top of my head...

When I was in high school we had these at least once a week and they were called "homework checks." Basically what they were was we were given a problem or 2 from our homework assignment (by page and problem number only) and we could only use our homework assignment to complete the "check."

Spot Checks (I'm envisioning the quizzes run on paper that has circles in the border)

I use Tickets to Enter--- if they get enough of them correct, I give them a reward.

I use Tickets to Leave to see how much has stuck into their brains after a lesson.

I called them homework checks when I taught Algebra I a few years ago.

I always tell the kids, "It's time to show what you know!!" They love it; they sit up straighter and seem to mentally prepare themselves for what's coming. It's amazing that a simple sentence can have such an effect!
