I was invited to join by some coworkers and did, but now I can't figure out the purpose of the site (other than collecting friends) or how to use it. Anybody? And why can I see posts made to friends by people I don't know? Can someone explain how this site works? Is there an A-Z network?
I use it to keep up on old friends that I don't necessarily want to e-mail all the time. I can see when they update pictures or add new 'status' messages. I also add pictures and notes so they know what's going on with me. So it's more like a giant bulletin board that you can just post to. Yes, there is an a-z network. A-Z teachers
I suggest that you just "hang out" awhile and look around. At first I didn't see the point at all, and now I need an intervention to stay away some days.
Same here, Ima! I avoided facebook for a long time because I suspected it was the devil incarnate or something... some people I know are very against it... finally I signed up under a screen name and saw basically what Jem said -- I can keep in touch with people I would have lost otherwise because I'm really not great at keeping in touch, but this way we can see what each other is up to and send little notes/comments about things. It's the little things that keep acquaintances going so that you can pick up again if you have to.
My profile is completely private - I don't want any of the kiddies finding me! but it is great to find old friends and much easier to keep up with and in touch with people than trying to find time to call everyone. It can be addicting... but it's fun.
I'm addicted to "MyFarm" on there. I've gotten a little OCD with it and my trees... lol ok it is a little more like a LOT OCD with it.
yeah, it is a fake farm where you grow crops, trees, have animals, earn "money" to grow more crops, buy a chicken coop, woodshed and barn in order to make more money... lol. Basically useless but addictive over time.
Sounds like the old simcity. I loved that game, then my brother went and pawned it. I'm getting a little better at the searching, but it seems like that is all I do, search for people and groups. It feels very much like collecting baseball cards. You try to add as many friends as possible, even if you were never really close way back in the day.
I too avoided it until just recently. I now am "addicted" as my children put it. I like YoVille. My kids say that's just like Sims. It's also kinda fun to send Sushi to my friends! I have found and chatted with people I went to school with, my family and co workers. I don't have to worry about my students finding me becuse they're just 6 years old. And honestly, I don't post anything that's embarrassing because that's just not me. If a parent found my page, I wouldn't worry either.
since i know about it, i'm trying to avoid it. but friends keep persuading me to have one. i just don't know what so good about having one of these. by the way, do you really want others know about your personal life???
All I do is play the word games. I don't have any pictures (except pets) and I really don't want anyone to know anything about me, so I don't post anything. I can't see getting into the fake stuff - fake gifts, fake cities .... what is the point?
We are strongly discouraged from having any facebook, my space or the like accounts. I guess in Ohio, if you are under any sort of investigation, they can use the accounts against you. We had a big meeting about it in the beginning of the year. Too bad too, since I love seeing my sister's account when she is over. We have hooked up with many of our high school friends!
Metropolis is a game, not just a "fake city" because you actually have to buy, sell, keep down the crime rate, make people happy, etc. I don't really get the point of the "fake gifts" things, although I've messed around with them some when I don't have anything better to do.
What are the groups all about? I have joined a few (A-Z, high school class, etc.) but I'm not sure what is supposed to happen. Is there some sort of notification when things are updated or changed? How active are these groups? In the last week it looks like nothing has happened on any of them unless I'm really thick.
I'm on my high school alumni band group, and they post practice schedules and performances on ours. Plus, when there is an even coming up, they can put up and even and let us RSVP so we can see who is coming. Some high schools have them for a particular class and plan their reunions. The teacher forum groups I joined all have a thread where people can post who they are online so people can match the real names to the usernames.
