Summer vacation was over! Back to work tomorrow, busy busy. I think there's a couple rejoining the work force with me tomorrow? I have meetings Tues-Thurs at the district office this week, which should be equal parts interesting and annoying. But we should be getting the final pieces of the puzzle for the school year, which is good. Teachers are back Aug 14, students back Aug 21 so we're right at the 4 week marker. Let's go!

I have to report back August 5. Students return August 12. I'm soaking up every last bit of summer break that I can.

I agree! I'm excited and pumped for the new school year and doubt I'll sleep at all tonight. But I've also really enjoyed the last couple of weeks hanging out with my teenagers. Aha well! Going to try and be as productive as possible tomorrow. First thing on the list is I've got to make sure the paint/maint crew finished everything they needed to get done. Probably going to try and open the school up a little so it can air out.

We go back August 8th. Kids start the 12th.

I still have another week left at my summer camp, so I haven't even started thinking about the school year yet.

So let me tell y'all bout my day. Five minutes after someone figured out I was in the building I was told I was needed to the cafeteria. Get down there maintenance spilled paint ALL over the floor. The floor which is supposed to be gray concrete is six different colors. Then I found out like five classrooms hadn't been painted at all, and the band room which was supposed to have carpet was bare plywood. So i introduced myself to maintenance and they probably think I'm the devil incarnate.

Summer is June and July around me. August is too hot to be outside so I’d rather play in June and July anyway.

It wasn't really hectic so much as annoying. They were the only ones I really had to be on top of.

And apparently as I have discovered if you don't stay on top of them they have a tendency to slack off and not get things done that needs doing. So I made sure from my perch on their backs that stuff got accomplished.

So here's the thing. Two weeks ago P and I both got an email saying that all of the classrooms were painted, band room carpet was being laid, and the cafeteria was done. They had spilled a little paint but would get rid of it. Come in this morning found everything the way it was. I first tried to discover was there a reason it didn't get accomplished. What was the malfunction so we could get it fixed. They ASSURED me, two hours tops and it would be done.

This was at 0730 ish. So 1300 rolls around and there had been ZERO progress. Absolutely zero. So I again went to investigate. They're in the maintenance area playing cards! CARDS!! It was at this point I assumed my perch.

I go back Wednesday and first day is August 1st. I have mixed emotions about it.
Summer was good but I do like teaching (most of the time) and kinda missed it.

In-between district meetings today my P and I definitely had a conversation about that. He feels part of it is that they don't see me as an authority figure. He also knows that part of it is they're slackers... So iunno. I'm sure we'll be discussing that some more this/next week. This week is kinda hectic with district meetings and stuff so we'll probably come back to it next week sometime. Like today it was mostly just a welcome back to the school year, welcome all the new admins in the district, global policies that are changing for the district, stuff of that nature. Like for instance the high schools marching band has been approved this year to start traveling to away football games and use district busses to do so.

They better start respecting you. If they don’t shape up, then they need to go. You are their superior and they need to recognize you as such.

I can't imagine the principals around here being responsible for that. All that work is contracted out and dealt with by an outside company.

I mean either way we'd still be responsible to make sure the work was completed in a satisfactory manner from the customers POV.
