I was out with my mom and son and we were doing the garage(yard) sale thing. We saw a sign for an estate sale and thought why not. we have been to some before and always found interesting things. Well this one was from an older gentleman and they were selling off everything in his house. To say he was a pack rat is an understatement. this was the last weekend and there was still tons of stuff.

Any way I was looking around, found The Oxford Book of Amercian Verse and Atlas of the Presidents and my son found this oriental wooden puzzle thing. Then I spy this flag, turns out someone else was going to buy it. My mom asks the guy if he has his heart set on it. He says no why? I say because I teach US History and would love to have it in my classroom. He picks it up and tosses it to me. Turns out this flag is a 48 star flag and more than likely flew in the Korean war. The man whose stuff was being sold was a medic in the Army. I also bought a ton of his pics from the Korean War, he was stationed at Heartbreak Ridge.

    Just wanted to share.

I found a 48-star flag when Mom and I were going through my dad's stuff. It was the one who had been on my great grandfather's casket. I haven't decided what to do with it. I thought it was an interesting find!

    Ima,

There are flag cases that can be bought to display flags. My dad has a flag that was taken down from his ship the day he retired. His ship was off the coast of Vietnam, his retirement papers came in, he announced his retirement over the PA system, the crew lowered the flag, presented it to him, and off he went with a group of Marines in a landing vehicle. He has pictures that were taken of the men standing on deck saluting him as he left, along with a scrapbook of letters written to him after his retirement. The flag in the display case is hanging in his study, along with some of the photos. You can also get a brass plate telling about the flag. What a fantastic family treasure.

That is so neat! That is exactly the kind of thing my DH hopes to find each time we go antiquing or garage saleing. He loves Americana and American History artifacts. (we both do!)

I love estate sales, consignment shops, flea markets...so fun! Nearly everything in our house was bought secondhand...and has a unique flavor to it.

Great find, wonder, out of curiosity, what the flag is worth on Ebay.
