I have been teaching for 8 years. Fabuluous evaluations; no problems whatsoever. But this year it all fell apart. I have been written up four times this year. The first write up was for dozing in class. I have a son that was seriously wounded in Iraq and has had to endure many surgeries. We have no family here and I was his sole caretaker. Nights are really bad with him and I spent quite a few nights up all night long. Well, I dozed off in my co-teaching class. I know it was inexcusable. The second write up was for leaving a professional learning class early due to illness. The third write up was for being sarcastic to a student. The fourth write up was for alledgedly trying to access inappropriate websites. I did not try to access anything inappropriate! I teach in a county (butts) and I was trying to get county information for a project that my students were doing. As a result everything came up as being porn. I called for an investigation but I was still given a reprimand. Knowing that it was my time to leave I gave my resignation and finished the school year. I got a satisfactory annual review signed by the principal. However, I can't find a job. I have been on interviews and have been upfront about the write ups. On the applications I give my principal as a reference and he has sent his recommendation to the school systems and I always include what has occurred so I know he is not giving me a good recommendation. I get calls for interviews from these same systems, but no job offers. I am perplexed. I'm not trying to hide anything, but why call me for an interview? The interviews have been great with several saying they are very interested but I never receive a call back. I just had an interview last week and again no call back. I called yesterday and left a message but again no call. Will I ever be able to teach again???

What caught my attention here was that porn came up when you tried to access info for Butts County? Why would they write you up for that? Surely this has happened to other.
Did you have to sign all these write ups? I would have included a note in my file that I didn't agree with the write up.
In my school system, we are allowed to review our own files and if there's anything we don't approve of or agree with, we can attach a note or contact the person who wrote it and meet with them to ask that adjustments be made.
Can you find out if your system has a similar way of protecting you from misinformation ending up in your file?

Were you able to get union assistance in your write-ups? For goodness sakes, like it hasn't happened before with the county. I hope your son is doing better.

did the principal just not like you? Four random write-ups doesn't make sense. Was the P trying to find something against you?

Were your 8 great years at the same school? same principal?
Did you go all 8 years with no problems and they all started this year?
    something doesn't jive.

I know at my school, you can't even get good sites to come up because they are often blocked. I've never seen porn or anything slightly inappropriate come up. I know different districts have different blocking software, but ......

I know at my last school once you have "proven" yourself as a good teacher, they overlook alot (not everything obviously). For example, the school I just left I had been at for 4 years. It was so hard to leave because they thought the world of me. I had the backing of P and AP. I could have done just about anything (within reason) and they would think I was in the right. You know there were times we spent more time at recess or didn't follow basal as strictly as we were supposed to. They trusted me because they knew I got the job done and done well.

Now I am starting at a new school where I will have to "prove" myself all over again.

:hugs: I don't have any advice but I'll keep you in my thoughts. It sounds like it was just a really bad year. It seems like the write ups for being sarcastic, "inappropriate " websites, and leaving b-c you were ill are overkill. Especially after 8 solid years. Was there a change in leadership or perhaps something political going on??? It just doesn't seem right and I feel for you. :hugs:

cmw, I'm thinking same thing. OMG, if every teacher was written up everytime they have said something sarcastic.....

that is why I love teaching the little ones - I can be sarcastic all day long. I say it with a smile and keep going.

    Same school system

All of my years teaching was at the same school. I even was a parapro at that school for 4 years prior to getting my teaching certificate. 6 of those years were with the same principal. My last 2 years were with this new principal. I do think he had it out for me. I came in early each day, did my job, but it seemed to never be enough. Despite all the write ups he still gave me a satisfactory annual evaluation, but won't give me a good recommendation. I have written a counter letter to all of the write ups except were I dozed off. I should have done something to keep myself awake. I just spoke with a former AP that I worked with for 7 of the years and he gave me a little pep talk. At this point I just don't know if I will be ever given a chance to teach again. What I don't understand is why P's never call back even if you didn't get the job. Thank you for listening to my ranting.

    Sensors

Students are suspended if they try to access the Butts County Chamber of Commerce b/c it comes up as porn. If they try to research poetry and the site has "love" poems it comes up as porn. If you try to do a Google search and anything with Myspace or Facebook comes up, and you don't click on it, you get written up.

Did you have to sign all these write ups?

No, the letter is just placed in your mailbox.

Once my principal asked to have me sign up to have him observe one of my classes (evaluations). I had NOTHING to hide and I was proud of my work...so I said, come in ANYTIME.

Well, he chose to come in while I was having a private trumpet lesson with one of my students. So the lesson went on. It was one of the better students and therefore was productive and went off without a hitch. I wasn't worried about his evaluation. What could go wrong?

Then I GET the evaluation... and he grades me very poorly! I came to find that anytime it spoke about teaching to the CLASS, taking questions from the CLASS, engaging the CLASS, differentiating for all the students... instead of writing "does not apply" and then adapt the form FOR a one-on-one lesson, HE writes.. "did not show evidence of this". So the score came out VERY VERY low. HelLO??????

I was allowed to write a rebuttal to the review/write-up and have IT stay in my record along with the bogus report.

    *****

Oh...and that comment about...maybe the principal didn't like you or had something against you... THIS principal DIDN'T like me-nor MOST of the teachers-so I DO believe that THAT was the reason he tried to pull that....hoping I would cower and "take it". Uh uh!

This was ALSO a principal who...while salary negotiation season was going on (and WE didn't have a union to back us) came in at lunch, clucked his tongue and smirked that we shouldn't fight too hard for more money... we should KNOW we are stuck... after all we were SUCH a bad staff that WHO would hire us????

We were so pi$$ed and after he left the room that those who were THINKING of leaving the district DECIDED to leave that year...*I* included...but to not let HIM know that we were leaving until the last minute. He was socked with 40% of his staff quitting on him in early to mid-August.

I heard that he kept telling the "new" staff members that they should be doing things like the previous staff did-because they were MUCH better teachers.

    Oh well.

    lauriean,
Don't give up hope. If you are getting interviews, you are halfway there. Just realize that the job market is really tight right now, and all kinds of wonderful, fabulous teachers are being turned away. We did an interview the other week, and we interviewed 10 candidates. Nine of them were sensational, and if we'd had nine openings, we would have hired them all. But alas, we had 1 opening so 8 fabulous ones (and one totally clueless one) were turned down. I know that had to be hard on them.

We didn't even pick the absolutely strongest candidate. We picked the best candidate who we felt would get along with the grade level team we already have in place. The person with the absolute best credentials and experience also was very, very self assured (read: a little bit bossy) and we thought she'd probably run-over the soft-spoke (but well-loved) grade level chair. We felt the second most qualified applicant would work the best with the grade level team. (They were all totally qualified on paper.)

There are so many different agendas going in during the hiring process. As an applicant, you never really know the half of it.

laurian, I had a very similar experience. I had taught for 13 years at the same school. The P that hired me left after the first year and the next P was okay. My mom passed away and I had a hard time but it was kind of delayed. During my 12th year I was very depressed and I got an unsat. at midterm, I finished the year with a satisfactory after I stared some meds.
In my 13th year, a new P came. I think he saw me as"the weakest link" and targeted me. I could do nothing right, if I did something it was wrong even though I had always done it before. I was under constant scrutiny and I could not take the pressure. My union was NO help and I ended up resigning.
I think P's want someone young and cutesy. At least that was what replaced me and I am neither :(
Sorry I am so long today was a sad day for me, full moon maybe?

I just wanted to say that I understand about the loss of a loved one causing emotional havoc on you. My boyfriend of 17 years died 3 months ago and I have good days and bad days. I'm glad it's summer so I can just veg when needed and not feel the pressure to be "on" for my students right now. I just want to get better so That am ready for the fall. I always pull myself through so I know I will be fine. I hope you find the strength you need to have more good days than bad ones. It takes time. My doctor has helped me a lot with counseling and medication when needed to help me cope. He understands that I need to get through my days successfully because of the nature of my job.

Thankfully, I have always worked in schools where administration always put family first. I hope my new teaching situation does the same. I wish you all the luck. This is tough. But you are still getting interviews and that is a definite positive!:hugs:

I spoke with the principal from my last interview, the one that I'm waiting on so anxiously, and she stated that they have not made a decision yet and that if I should get a job I would be notified by mail. My boyfriend thinks that I didn't get the job. So I'm still waiting and hoping. Thank you for all the responses. So much has changed in the hiring process than it was 9 years ago. Back then if you breathed you were hired on the spot. I am new to this forum and have enjoyed it very much and it keeps me going and remaining positive.

Now, that is new. I have never heard of being informed by mail. But I guess every state and every district is district is different as I am learning myself. Keep the faith and know that there are many that are pulling for you. Keep looking in the interim. Recheck your applications and make sure everything has been submitted. You can go online and do this. Also keep checking websites for new openings and venture outside your comfort zone and try out some nearby districts. All the best. We are all rooting for you!:):):)

I hope, hope, hope I'm wrong, but usually they inform the person who gets the job via mail, and once they have a positive response from that person, they notify by mail.

I do hope I"m wrong, hon.

It makes me angry when I hear of principles targeting teachers for no reason. I was on the receiving end of that recently, too!
It reminds me of Jr. High school when someone is targeted for bullying. And that's how I think of those types of admin. They are acting like they are in Jr.High. It makes for a very miserable year.

I personally think it's a power trip. I don't believe this to be true for ALL P, but in my experience I was TOLD "I am the Principal."

Unfortunately, I believe this happens in many different professions. ONE person can ruin an individuals' professional career. That ONE person just doesn't realize the ramifications of their actions at that time.

I hope everything works out for you.

    Good Luck

    Update

The principal called this morning and she said that she was checking my references. I have prayed continuously since then. She said she will probably call sometime today once she has heard from my references. I will continue to pray and thanks for the support.

You are not doomed. I don't know why these things happen, but I agree with the words of my grandmother. Bad things happen, but then good doors are opened for us. Look for those good doors to open. I can understand a little of what you're going through. I've been through some of it myself. There is always something to learn from a situation. Even if all you learn is that you can overcome and not to give up, that is something that will make you a stronger and better person. Don't let bitterness creep in. Just continue to do your best, and someone will see you for who you are and offer you an amazing job. I will be thinking about you. I know it's hard, but keep on trying! It will pay off!

Right. It's sad that some people think it's ok to use their authority in this way. I found this so disappointing as a new teacher. The key is to not let these kinds of situations ruin our names, but to show others who we are. Just be the best you can be and more! :hugs:
