I'm going to ask tomorrow to be sure, but our ISD gives stipends to secondary Math Teachers. I am certified to teach math and I currently teach 6th grade math in a middle school setting (6-8). Is this considered secondary? Will I get the stipend?

I've only heard secondary used to reference a high school setting.

Secondary is considered 7-12 in my state even though 6th grade is in a middle school building.

I would inquire and justify why you should get it.

In NJ, we pretty much go with secondary being 9-12. That said, who knows what another state will call your position. Never wrong to ask.

I am classified as secondary because my degree is 7-12 in one subject, but I teach in middle only.

In my district secondary is 9-12. Middle school is 6-9 and elementary K-6. No idea why ours overlap. Some schools have 6th in elementary and some in middle, but 9th is ALWAYS high school and secondary only applies to high school.

But clearly there is some regional variation, so go ahead and ask! You never know.

In my district secondary is grades 6 through 12. Elementary is K through 5.

I didn't realize that other places don't refer to middle school as secondary.

In my district it's 6-12 as well. I always thought Middle School was considered secondary; though I have heard of it referred to as 'intermediate'.

Since you're teaching math, horned_Frog, I'd make the case that you're certified for it and you're teaching it in a departmentalized setting - and that that's pretty much the operational definition of "secondary".

Utah seems to separate K-8 and secondary.

As far as licensure is concerned, 7-12 is "secondary" in NY.

I did some research! Last night, I looked around our district website. I noticed that our middle school kids go to the "secondary reassignment center" for behavioral issues and our grading policy is divided into "elementary" and "secondary".

Then, I asked the returning teacher on my team about it, and she said she got it last year.

    So it looks good!
