Not sure if this is what you mean, but my school has an agricultural track for student who are going to become fishermen or farmers. They are often the most difficult, since they need very few academic credits to graduate and often are in that track because of behavioral problems (long story).

In our class (we team teach) , we have a set routine, a reward system, and little downtime. Before we start the class, everyone has to be in uniform and things have to be clean, then we bow (it's in Japan). After that, we do a warm up where they can earn points- listen to a song, class oral quiz, listening quiz, or a short ( and not too exciting) game. After that is a short lecture (review and new material) with lots of questions to make sure they are paying attention. The rest of the time they do written exercises with a lot of support from us. Having two teachers in the classroom really helps for this bit. If they finish, we check their work right there and give immediate feedback.

Strangely enough the students really enjoy the class. we're really careful about pacing and give one on one attention, which they really appreciate. We also make sure to joke with them and get to know them outside of class. Because of the worktime in class, they don't have homework, which they love (they all have jobs after school and don't do the homework for other classes).

Our alternative h.s. is one in which students that have fallen behind in credits, have chronic attendance problems, and disipline problems come for credit recovery. Other students just don't fell that they fit in at regular HS. The regular HS has a "greenhouse project" so that may be an idea that we can look at.

    Thank You
