;) I've read 4.5 classroom management books over the summer and NO more! My head is going to explode. I think my plan is:

*procedure them to death for the first 2 weeks - actually have students work in small groups to come up with steps for different procedures/routines and illustrate other procedures that I do myself. We'll create a class book that we can leave for subs.

    * have students involved in daily class meetings where we will come up with rules and consequences, solve problems that we have in the classroom, and give compliments/build community.

*provide a cool down area (time out in disguise)

*use logical consequences/time outs when needed.

Not using a clip chart- I was very inconsistent with it last year. Considering not doing a punch card or treasure box stuff- I don't like rewarding kids for behaving as they should anyway... I had a lot of 'what do I get for doing this?'. I am thinking we could decide on a goal for the class tomreally focus on and we could have a celebration at the end of each trimester.

    Thoughts??

In general your plan sounds good. I also recommend the free resources here.

I love the idea of having students help create a class book for the sub!

Congrats on spending so much time focused on classroom management. While your head feels like it will explode NOW, you'll have a much more peaceful and relaxing year ahead of you so it will pay off.

I agree completely about not rewarding kids for expected behaviors.

I know there are philosophies about having the students contribute to the class rules/routines, but my experience has been that it is always best for the teacher to draw out the plans and then guide the students to reaching those same thoughts.

I plan out every.single.procedure. I have some free printables and a video that may be helpful to you when planning out yours.

You can access them here: TEACHING PROCEDURES & ROUTINES IN THE CLASSROOM

Also, I second Whole Brain Teaching! Well, worth investigating further.

I also like the idea of a book for the sub.

I know I am going against the majority here, but I do not spend a lot of time on procedures. I talk about what to do as it naturally comes up and we move on.

Fourth graders like to do things and we get started on academics on day one. It has worked for me so far!

    You've read 4.5 books.

I would put the issue aside and let it simmer in the back of my mind.

Switch gears and work on academics, then come back to classroom managment in a week or so. I bet you return to the topic with a much clearer idea of what will work for you.

    Thanks for the suggestions!
Aliceacc- I think you're right, I should let them simmer a bit.

Iheartrecess- thanks for the link! I love your site. :). We actually have school wide rules, so I brainstorm with the kids and then we look at how the rules they come up with fit under one of our school rules. And for the procedures- I would onlygive them a select fw to develop and would definitely be guiding them toward my own thoughts. ;)

    Thanks!
