    I want to do "me bags" where the kids are given a paper bag and told to fill it with 3-5 things that tell us more about them. I want to make one for me... but I am drawing a blank as to what types of things I should include...

    What would you put in your bag?

    I do a similar activity called "Unpack Your Personality" where each student brings in 3-4 items that explain who they are. I tend to bring it little items that give students a glimpse of who I am. For example, I typically bring in:

    -drumsticks because I played drums when I was younger, along with other instruments
    -a Beatles record, because they're my favorite musical group
    -a book because I love to read
    -a picture of something I'm trying to learn-last year it was a picture of a boat because my husband is teaching me how to sail.

    This is copied from the handout that I give my students... (5th grade)

    Bag It!
    Read the following list of categories. At home, find 5 items to represent a total of 5 categories (1 item represents 1 category). The items must be small enough to fit into the lunch bag that was given to you. Try to find items that are 3-D and unique. Be prepared to share the contents of your bag with the class.

    Your filled bag is due on: _____________________________

    Categories
    -a hobby or free-time activity that you enjoy
    -one of your favorites (food, color, music, book, etc.)
    -something you’d like to do better
    -a place you’d like to visit
    -something special about your family
    -the best part of summer vacation
    -something that reminds you of a memorable event or time in your life
    -something special about your family
    -something that you really dislike
    -a talent or special ability that you have

    hope this helps. I can send you the actual handout if you would like. Its awfully cute if I do say so! :)

    I try to bring in a variety of items to model to the students so they just don't bring in 5 of essentially the same thing (i.e. 5 pictures, 5 toys, etc). I used to do this every year I was teaching. Last year, I brought a diaper, apple, matchbox car similar to my own, something pink, and cat food.

    diaper = baby at home
    apple = teacher
    matchbox car= "my" car
    something pink= favorite color
    cat food = cat at home

    TeacherApr- I like how you model it before hand. I knew that I would do my own but never considered when I would show it. Now I know to make sure I do it when I give the assignment. :)

    It's also a good idea to show them picture of you at that age and also any work you kept.

    I'm glad you brought this up! Last spring when I was cleaning I found a similar project I did a while ago. I may do it again this year.

    I give each student 5 Ziploc bags (sandwich sized). They put one item in each. Then, in school, they write a paragraph about each item on small-ish paper. I then staple the whole thing together (with the zips facing out) and make a book out of it. For the cover, we use a student decorated felt piece. The completed books go in the classroom library and on the student's desk for Meet the Teacher night.

    Mine has a cassette (I love music, CDs don't fit),
    a magnet from a (not so) recent trip to Ireland,
    a picture of my family,
    a tea bag (I am seriously addicted), and
    a small giraffe ornament (from my collection).

    I've done a photo of my family, a bookmark because I like to read, a swim cap, because I like to swim, a race medal (finisher, not because I'm fast, lol), I know there's more, but I can't think of them right now.
