Not many people at my husband's ad agency are married, so I get a lot of domestic projects, like putting together Easter baskets for the car dealers.

Today's project? Baking a cake that looks like a Mini Cooper. Apparently they have the pan below, and I get to turn it into a cooper of my choice. Suggestions on color and accessories are welcome. I'm going to start researching options now.

Holy crapola. This is what I'm suppose to replicate. How did they get the lettering so straight?? Eeeeek. Seriously, I can't mess up, as his boss will see this.

Who is the cake master on here? Stop teaching and come give me tips!!

For one some bakeries will copy a pic or whatever on an edible fondunt (sp?). I think that may be how they did the top!!!

I have now idea except for using a knife to make it that smooth & used a small round tip for the detail work.

Thanks, Diznee! I think I do need to make that smooth, flat frosting and then wrap the cake in it. I know they have markers you can write on frosting with, so I'll get those for the words and the small details, like the checkered mirrors. I found a cake shop in San Rafael I'm going to zip over to after I get the pan at lunch. I plan to work on it this afternoon, so I'll take lots of pictures!

You'll have to let us know how it goes!!! You have more time to contend with then me. I would be decorating it like the other pix with the flower tip or something!!!

Gosh, who do they think you are, Duff from Ace of Cakes?! Looks fun, but there is no way I could make one as neat as that sample! Be sure to share the pics when it's done!

I am definitely not a good enough decorator to pull that off, but I wish I were able to. I love watching television shows where they make the fancy cakes. I hope that it went well.

It's going to have to wait until tomorrow. I forgot I had a meeting with my trainer at 3, and then dh said he left the instructions for the cake mold at work. Apparently the background story is Mini's 50th birthday is coming up. They want all the dealers to make these cakes at their dealerships. So they want me to make one, and take pictures of it, and send it out with the mold saying that is what they need to look like. So I said I should take step-by-step pictures so they can follow easier. So I will have lots of pictures, I'm sure.

Sigh. I know. They keep having jobs open up, and I would so, so good at that agency, but dh feels weird about us working together. I figure if I do enough of these projects, then his boss will take notice and maybe something will open up. Dh just got a raise, so I suppose that's worth all the work. ;)

Jem, I get my kicks from reading about your projects. I have no doubt you can pull this off. I took cake decorating classes and decorated my own wedding cake. Have fun.

Why don't they send the pictures to the dealerships that you posted here?

"Holy car-shaped cake Batman!" This project seems quite more extensive than putting together some Easter baskets! I think it is great that you are so willing to help out, but do you think it's crossed the line to the point where they are taking advantage of your generosity?

Eh, it's all fun. I got all the supplies this morning at a local cake supplies place. I got a book on how to work with foundant. I'm going to hold off until Monday, as I have too much to do this afternoon, and I want to bring it straight into the office when it's done, so this weekend is out. That will also give me time to plan strategy. I think it will work out ok. I got red coloring for the car, and black markers to write 'MINI' on the top and do the mirror checkers with. And I got gold dust to put on the car lights. Everything always looks perfect in my head, so we'll see how it comes out in reality. I'll post pictures when I'm done.

I'm not sure they can use those pictures, as it was a professional cake. I'm going to take step-by-step pictures, although I can't imagine any car dealer actually making one these.

Ok, here goes! The cake is in the oven and I am making a checkerboard 'platter' for it to sit on. I bought a piece of white cardboard at the cake store, and I'm going to make little checkers on it with the edible marker I also got. It's going to be at least two hours before I can start the frosting, as it has to cook for an hour and then cool for an hour, but that's good. It gives me time to plan. I'll post pictures when I'm done!

I've always said if I got a mini, it would be dark brown with a white, cream colored top.

Just like a pint of Guinness!

Can you make one like that? And it has to be an S model too.

Sure, Sarge! I've decided after this, I charge $75 an hour. But I'll throw in free delivery, just for you! ;)

Well, I've already messed up. I used a 1 lb. cake mix, as the lady at the store told me that would be plenty. It didn't fill the mold, but I thought it might rise. Nope! I needed to use a lot more mix. So we're starting over. Although my checkerboard base came out sweet. I'm off to the store for more mix...

Jem, I hope you bought the real red food coloring for cake decorating. Otherwise, the kind you buy at the grocercy store will turn out a weak red, kinda like your weak pink in your hair.

Yes, I got the cake coloring. We are go for cooling. An hour to cool, and then it's off to frosting! Which will begin at approx. 11pm here in CA. I'm amazingly awake...
