So DH is planning our first "after retirement" trip. It started out as a 2 week cruise to Hawaii. Then, we decided to drive cross country to visit places we have never been as we head to California. The list is getting longer...the trip is up to 6 weeks. But, it sure will be fun!!
I need to start mine as I will retire May of 2020. My husband will work ten months after that in his government job, but I am hoping for a fall trip with him.
I retire in 2020 as well. My first decision will be where I choose to retire; the area I live in is very expensive and I want to move somewhere more affordable.
I plan on scratching off items on my bucket way before retirement (30-40 more years for me as I’m 26). Eventually (so within the next few years), my goal is to take multiple vacations/excursions every single year. In mid-April, I will be completely debt free (just $7,000 left!!!) and so I can start paying off my yearly bills in one go. This will enable me to have tons of fun money every month after savings and retirement. Does anyone have any recommendations for places they’ve visited and think are absolutely worth seeing? What shows or performances did you see that you really liked? What are some eateries (that is, favorite restaurants) that are “to die for”? In my case, I’ve already seen Cirque de Soleil, I’ve visited Universal Studios twice, Disney Land once, Disney World about 10 times (and I’ve stayed at various resorts in Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, etc); I’ve been to Japan twice for a week at a time, and I’ve been on a cruise to the Bahamas. I also took a gambling trip to Thunder Valley casino (I LOVE blackjack) a few times, but that is neither here nor there. I would love suggestions! (Anyone going to buy the car of their dreams? I’m looking at an Audi R8, which is definitely in my price range for a car. Though, it won’t be for 5 years at least. @YoungTeacherGuy, what do you recommend?! I recall you saying that you are a car enthusiast, as well, haha!)
We’re doing an Alaska cruise and land trip this summer. We did it over 20 years ago when our daughter was little, but this time we’re meeting up with college friends who have also recently retired.
I would love to visit Australia. When my aunt was retired, she took a freighter and went to New Zealand. I remember her being gone for many weeks but she said it was the most relaxing trip she had ever taken.
We both enjoy travel, but we are limited to summertime with both of us working. We will be retiring in between 2 and 5 years. We haven’t decided for sure yet. We hope to travel more.
Since taking my pension in the Summer of 2016 we have done: A 2 week New England Cruise A week in Boston, Ma to watch the Bruins (For my 60th birthday) 5 weeks in the USA driving Route 66 from L.A. to Chicago 2 vacations in France (1 was to see our grand daughter dance at Disneyland Paris) A 2 week cruise to the Caribbean A 12 day cruise to the Canary Islands 4 weeks touring Australia. Plans for the future : 2 weeks in Slovakia at the Ice Hockey world championships (booked) A vacation to New Zealand (subbing to save for) More NHL hockey, probably in Chicago Enjoy your bucket list, we are!
In the UK Audi drivers are the worst. If anyone cuts you up, pulls out of a side road in front of you, undertakes than 9 times out of 10 it will be an Audi.
That balance of affordable and enough amenities is a hard find. Every time I look at a less expensive area, I find either there isn't enough to do or enough to have choice, and when there is the cost isn't that much lower. I know good place is out there but finding it will be a challenge.
You are so lucky. 2040. In 2040. I will have my 30 years. Of course I'll only be 50 years old, so I'll still have plenty of life left in me.
My retirement is probably 23 years from now so I definitely don't wait to live life now. This summer I'm taking a road trip to Alaska with my dog(s), from California along the coast, through Canada and come back through Montana. I'd recommend the following: - I've been to both sides of the Grand Canyon, the Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon - Utah and Arizona are absolutely gorgeous, I plan on going back and explore more - Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein (last summer) - Croatia (2 years ago) - Greece (about 28 years ago). Travel is definitely worth spending the money, but there are so many things and places you can see in this country.
Let me recommend the Hurtigruten, the ships that ply the coast of Norway from Bergen north and then east to Kirkenes, on the Russian border. These ships' chief function is to provide transportation for people and goods - it takes less time to sail across the mouth of a fjord than to drive all the way around it, so the Hurtigrut is basically an intertown bus route done by boat - but the Norwegian government realized fairly early on that hauling sightseers was a great way to pay for the service, so each ship has staterooms and a full (and skilled!) kitchen. The round trip takes eleven days, and the scenery is amazing.
Retirement is sublime . We have trips planned for the next 2 years to include traveling across the US coast to coast both on the southern path and the northern path. We will also be going cross country across Canada. Then we will be taking a cruise to Australia and New Zealand. I'm spending much of my time catching up with my favorite authors. I thought I would feel the pull when kids went back to school this year...nope, didn't happen! Best wishes to anyone close to retirement.
So jealous, swansong! I'll be retiring in 2022 and, some days, it can't come soon enough. I hope to be able to travel as much as you are!
