Do you ease your students back into the routine, or hit the ground running?
Everyone is always really tired the first day back (including me), so it is usually a nice quiet day. Overall, however, we just get right back into the routine.
We get right back into the routine, but on the first Friday back we do have a winter celebration - we ask the kids to bring their winter clothes (mittens, scarf, jacket, whatever) and we have a sight-word snowball fight (write the words on white paper, crumple, toss, the students pick up a word and if they can read it they get to toss it) and have chicken soup with rice (we read the chicken soup poem for the month every morning). It kind of bridges the fun of all the holidays while keeping it educational.
Ooo ... Tasha I love your ideas!
We will most likely get right back in the routine keeping in mind that I will have to reinforce a lot of the routines/rules etc again to help everyone get back on track!

I just borrowed the snowball idea!
Oooh, I LOVE that snowball idea... totally going to do that!
Unfortunately we have to hit the ground running-we have standardized testing next week, 4 days to review - dun dun dun!
I do give them new seats and new name tags which they love! I'll also give them some time to share and get out the chatter before we buckle down and get started!

Me, too Tasha! I will do the snowball game when we return.
We ease back into it the first day, too. We are having a fun assembly that day, so that will be nice. I plan on making New Years hats I saw on a K site.
We did the snowball fight last year and my kids were still talking about it at the end of the year!
I'm hoping to ease into the routine. Normally I would hit the ground running but we've been off for 3 straight weeks due to a snowstorm before Christmas break and one right after! I'm beginning to forget who is even in my class! lol
It really depends on the group. Last year, I had to go back over all expectations, rules, etc for every day activities. This year, I did not have to do that. We jumped right back in and the students did a wonderful job. Before we started on the first day back, I let them tell me something exciting that happened over winter break. They love sharing what they have done at home.
We just got right back into the routine, except for we didn't do small groups because of testing for report cards. I find that it is better just to get back into the groove and reinforce procedures.
Tasha - we do the snowball fight too - they absolutely LOVE IT!
Oh yeah - we also do the same thing with a raindrop fight in spring.
We've been back 5 days.
My kids have had 5 nights of homework and 2 quizzes each. My algebra kids have another quiz on Monday.
My geometry kids have a test next week; algebra has a test the week after.
OOPS-- sorry. I didn't realize this was the Kindergarten forum-- I would imagine things go a lot differently for you guys
We did the snowball fight for word study 3 days this week! I also asked a lot of math questions as we went along.
