Today I received a phone call (message) from a Middle School in my county. They are looking for a Social Studies teacher and called to see if I was interested in an interview.

The thing is...I have been aiming to be an elementary teacher (preference K-3 though I'm flexible). I've got my certificate in Middle School Social Science 5-9 and Elementary Education K-6. They have my application through the district application center which lists both of my certifications. I've applied to dozens of elementary schools and not a single middle school! This call came completely out of the blue.

I have to admit, this call has thrown me for a loop. And I know, I know, it's only to see if I'm interested in interviewing...but I haven't even CONSIDERED teaching middle school. My internship was in an elementary school. I've interviewed with an elementary school and the P seemed very interested...though I will have to wait until the new student numbers come in before he decides what positions he has and where I MIGHT fit best. This process could take a MONTH.

What should I do?? Accept an interview for teaching middle school (I love history and I love teaching kids...but I was prepared for the little ones!) or wait it out to see if I can find an elementary position?

Middle school. I never thought that I would love this age group as much as I do. I can't see me ever leaving.

I student taught first grade and was certain I never wanted to step foot in a middle school. After a year of subbing, and not finding any lower el teaching positions, I interviewed for a middle school position. I figured, why not, it can't hurt. I ended up getting the position and was beyond nervous. I taught there for three years and cannot imagine teaching anything other than middle school! Everyday is a blast!

Give it a shot...you may find that you really enjoy it!

Only you know how bad you need a job. If it were me I would take it regardless of what I PREFERRED to teach.

If you don't interview, you have no options to choose from. If you interview at multiple schools AND are offered the jobs, then you can choose which one to take.

Give it a whirl! I student taught in Middle School and it was so fun. I call it, "Big Kid Elementary School" (to myself, not the students) because many of the students are between the stage of being a little kid and an adolescence. There will be days where they want to act like they are older and know everything and you can have really in-depth conversations with them and then there are days where they want to please you and draw you pictures. I love it.

I would at least take the interview. I've been working in a middle school for the past two years and found that I love it after always saying I only wanted lower elementary. Middle school kids are pretty cool!

Good choice. I went from saying I would never go lower than 5th, to higher than 3rd, and now, never lower than 6th. I love middle school.

I also love being employed-good luck!

I've taught at the middle school level for over 10 years and loved it. Middle schoolers are a little unpredictable though, but yet very enjoyable.
