There's quite a bit of research done on the subject, actually, but the results are mixed. The most common treatment for ADHD is stimulant therapy, and caffeine is a stimulant. Results are mostly mixed because of the purity of the caffeine samples being provided. But this is a quite old tread, the original post is twelve years old!

Someone must have done a search for Mt. Dew and found this thread LOL
I'm sure you could drink coffee with the same effects and without all the crap loaded into Mt. Dew.

If you bump the little "date posted" label in the forum corner it switches it from newest posts to oldest posts, which are from 2007. I've switched it accidentally on my cellphone before. :D

Yeah, it's an old thread, but it's still relevant today :p
I have heard it works but it's so unhealthy!

I've had a few students drink soda at lunch per doctor's orders to help make it through the day, since medication starts to wear off. Not sure it helps but it doesn't seem to harm. The biggest problem with it as a teacher is when the student brags that they get soda but no one else does.

Mtn Dew works like no other soda for my friends kids. It calms them down, makes them focus and in a good mood. I don't think is just the sugar and caffeine. My guess is the bromine compound in the BVO somehow regulates dopamine. Bromide salts were used as sleep aids so maybe it acts as a mild sedative too.

This is why I loved working in a small rural county from the 70s to the teens. "obtw little rufus was acting like the Tasmanian devil today so I slipped him a cup of Mountain Dew" Since Rufus's uncle Buck has given him sips of beer since he was 3 mom was fine with it. My son's tech teacher in 10th grade makes them biscuits and gravy on Fridays. MY son has eaten it and it thrills me as he is Aspbergers and his own personal food guidlines are so narrow Im thrilled when someone inspires him to try new food. Unless you have ever taught a class of 8 yr olds with 3 ADHD kids with no meds you can only imagine hell on earth. A little mountain dew aint gonna kill anybody.

Tell that to my fructose-intolerant sister. The amount of corn syrup in that stuff would make her violently ill. She can't even eat certain fruits at all anymore as an adult. I have a much milder intolerance than she does and the two times in my life I've had mt dew it's made me sick. It's not a terribly common food sensitivity, but it's not rare either.

That's awesome about your son though. SO's autistic little bro will fight against anything that isn't chicken nuggets or french fries, no seasoning/flavors other than ketchup or ranch.

I knew going with that comment there were exceptions out there. Never heard of the fructose one. My son is amazing. He knew when mini ravioli changed their recipe. I looked it up when he complained and he was right. He is slowly VERY slowly trying new stuff now that he is 16. Temple Grandin (severe autism) would only eat orange jello for years. Went on to earn a PhD and became famous for her work with cattle.
