Can anyone tell me why students with ADHD are put on a 504, which are generally managed by the student themselves? At my school the 504' are managed by the counselors who are rarely involved, or only when a problem arises. I've noticed students who have special education accomodations that are managed by a special education teacher tend to preform better than the 504's. Why is this?
A 504 is a legal document requiring 'reasonable accomodations'. An IEP requires "specialized instruction". For more on the differences check this link: http://www.slc.sevier.org/iepv504.htm
From what I've witnessed, when students are placed on 504's it is mainly the classroom teacher's responsibility to make all of the accomodations for the student. Students on IEP's have special education teachers who implement or at least assist in implementing the accomodations and these accomodations and the student's progress is usually monitored more closely.
Hi Jennifer A student with ADHD has medical dx and has to go through 504 and attempt to receive support needed prior to spec ed can pick them up. Hopefully 504 sprovides support needed without spec ed. Spec ed can qualify students under OHI, but can not go that route until 504 has been tried and failed. In our district the assistant principal follows through on 504, at least writing it and getting signatures and then it is classroom teacher's resposibilty for following through with specified adaptations.
