Have any of you taken both the ACT and PraxisI? I have taken the ACT twice because I didn't get a high enough score the first time. The second time I took it I got a passing score for Ohio's teaching porgram. Now that I am moving to Virginia, but my ACT isn't score isn't high enough for Virginia so I either need to retake the ACT which I think the math is so hard (but everything else is no probalem for me) or I can take the PraxisI. I have never taken the praxis I but I think it would easier. Does anyone know for sure?

That's ACT as in the college entrance exam, right? (So that can be substituted in some places for Praxis I... hm.) Take a look at the sample questions for Praxis I - you'll find them in the Tests at a Glance documents on the Praxis Web site, http://www.ets.org/praxis - to get a sense of what Praxis I covers and how it's covered. Prep books for Praxis generally will somewhat overstate the difficulty of the math, but you could certainly check out a couple of those. A useful resource for prep would be LearningExpress's PRACTICAL MATH SUCCESS IN 20 MINUTES A DAY, 3rd edition (2005), which you should be able to find at any big bookstore.

    Hi all,
I'm so glad to know that others are experiencing difficulties with praxis ll. I have studied e'thing that I thought I could to make this successful. I have the study guide, tape record myself and I just ordered a Praxis CD. I'm hoping that I will be successful when I take it in June.

What frustrates me is that i've only missed it by 6 points!!!Grrrrrrrrrrrrr...This is maddening. If I don't pass it I won't be able to realize my lifelong dream...to teach.

If anyone has any other suggestions, ( I've read most of the post's here) shoot me a suggestions.

    Marathon studying....

Elementary content-0014. I purchased a book w/ a CD. It is a very good study aide. I will take the test on June 9th. I feel more confident than I did in previous time. Wish me well!!!

As in tomorrow... Cruise the Multiple Subject Tests threads and look for threads on classroom management and elementary teaching techniques. But don't spend tonight studying!

Clear thinking to you tomorrow, praxizanxiety.

    Katerina,

Are you sure it's the ACT? That's the test that HS seniors take before going to college.

Or are there two tests that somehow have the same acronym?

No, katerina's probably right on this. Colleges seem to be of the opinion that ACT is likelier than SAT to test the skills that most conduce to college success, though the recent revamping of SAT is supposed to have addressed this issue.

I should add that what ACT (or SAT, in some states) is or will be taken for is not subject area knowledge but basic skills. (This would be SAT I, not SAT II.) There's actually some sense to this: I can assure you that both SAT and ACT far outstrip California's CBEST, for example, in the sophistication of the reading comprehension and the math required. On the other hand, the person who scored a decent 630 on SAT math in 1977 might not do nearly as well twenty years later after a career in something entirely unrelated, and there's something to be said for a little motivation to brush up on those rusty old skills.
