I will teach an accelerated 7th grade language arts class next year. The emphasis will be on literature, vocabulary, and writing. What novels would be good for an accelerated group at this age?

One of the novels I used with my advanced 7th grade group was Lord of the Flies.

I have to be careful not to step on our high school's toes, so here's what I use:
    Call of the Wild
    Night
    Huck Finn
    Ella Minnow Pea
    Ann Rinaldi author study
We also do an intensive short story unit during first quarter that traces the development of the American short story from Poe to modern day.

Next year, I think I'm going to move to more short text in a workshop approach instead of doing so many whole-class novels. I'll probably only keep Night and Huck Finn.
