Ya gotta love a school where the principal comes on the PA in the morning to remind students that there are a lot of guest teachers on campus and to be on their best behavior...and then makes rounds later in the day to ask if there have been any problems!
The last time our PA came on unexpectedly during classes was on 9/11. It would scare the life out of me if it happened again.
I love it! When I know I will be out I will always go over how I expect my students to behave for the sub. I tell them that I expect the teacher will have no issues and have a great day. I always use the phrase that these teachers are "guests in our building." I also let them know of the minimum consequences for anyone whose name is written down by the sub for having issues. I think principals should especially visit those classes that are "more challenging" to support the teacher.
Often, when there are a lot of teachers out (due to meetings, etc) and there are lots of subs, they talk about it during the morning announcements. They remind the kids about behavior, etc. On those days in some schools the AP makes sure to make it to at least one class for each sub - once she apologized to not come to mine. In one school they never come to my class, because they know me, so they don't check on me / they know I can handle it, but I know they do go around. I think it's nice.
