As usual, I can't make up my mind!

I know for sure that I want to create my own classroom rules, but have the kids think they created them :p (related to this this thread that's going on today):

    http://forums.atozteacherstuff.com/showthread.php?t=88663

I got the idea today to order my rules on a VistaPrint banner (for free, of course) and have the kids sign it along the bottom. It would make a cute display all year long.

The problem is I can't decide on my rules! I'm certain I want something simple and all-encompassing. I absolutely loved Peachyness' index card idea on the thread link above. I'd like to hear what other 3-5 teachers have as their rules.

Here's what I've been bouncing around in my head:
    • Be safe
    • Be respectful
    • Be responsible
    or

    • Participate & Cooperate
    • Be respectful & responsible
    • Have a positive attitude
    • Make good choices

I teach 3rd grade and these are the rules that I provide for my students. We talk about the rules at the beginning of the year:
    1. Follow directions the first time given.
    2. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.
    3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
    4. Be polite and helpful.

There are a lot of specifics that the kids fill in. Like "Don't Hit" would be number 3. Third graders think very very specific so I help them by providing them with general rules (aka- my rules ;) )

Here's what I came up with. I'm hoping it's not too dark for the student's signatures to show up. I also wonder if I can fit 44 names. I have two classes. Sorry the image is huge

I "borrowed" these rules from someone and they have worked in every class I've taught.

    Be Respectful
    Be Responsible
    Be Remarkable

    I still can't see it... :(

I made mine using a banner- it turned out SOOOO cute! I have 6 rules (one of which is more of a procedure) but we are all "supposed" to have the same rules in my school. I have noticed that some don't (some have the respectful/responsible rules, others have different ones), but I make them work for me.

    Good Idea!

I would like to know how you go about receiving a banner for free. That seems too good to be true

    I have 3 rules:
    Be Ready
    Be Responsible
    Be Respectful

The 1st or 2nd day I let the kids brainstorm what "rules" go under each major rule. I print each rule at the top of a piece of lined chart paper, then write their rules underneath. We keep them on the wall all year, so everytime they do something they can look to see if it is breaking a rule.

I love the idea of making a banner and having them sign it!!!!

I am sooooooo doing that! I had originally planned to make a poster with the rules on Vistaprint but I ran over there and started created a banner already. =)

    Thanks for the idea!

As far as rules go - I'm using bits and pieces of Powerteaching so I'm using the rules from there:
    1 - Follow directions quickly
2 - Raise your hand for permission to speak
3 - Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat
    4 - Make smart choices
5 - Respect yourself, respect others, respect your school.

I changed the last rule - for Powerteaching the last rule should be Keep your Dear teacher happy.

I can't wait to actually see it, on the screen it looks nice. I didn't like any of their designs so I uploaded one of mine (a simplistic desktop wallpaper design from my computer.)

Even though you can't see it, it's a tiny bit dark, so I'm going to have the students sign in a silver marker.

I'm on a VP blitz today :) I also made a great magnetic:D poster with my morning routine on it. I won't have to write the same thing over and over! Yay!

I wish I could show them to everyone.

I've made several things on the car door magnets. I also had things made on the lawn signs too. The tricky part is going to be trying to get it through the laminator. I've made two banners so far, but I never thought to put my expectations (rules) on them. Hmm...

I like the new posters they just came out with because they're bigger than the car magnets. I made a car magnet last year with my a.m. procedures but I barely used it because it was a little small. Their news posters are 11 x 17.
