Is anyone using a 90 minute block and what does your schedule look like? grade 2
literacy block success!
I do 90 min blocks. 30 minutes of whole group then they are released to independent work (usually a workbook page) as they finish their work they go into centers and I pull small groups. I love it!
We have a 2 hr block....
20 min mini lesson reading
30 min guided reading/independent/conference time
10 min reflection/journal/share time
20 min mini writing lesson
30 min writing/conference time (6trait)
10 min word work (spelling, etc)
However, I still have a hard time keeping mini lessons to 20 min, when some books take longer to read

I have a 90-min block.
My schedule depends on the day. This block is only reading and spelling. I do writing and lang. arts in the afternoon.
But I'll do:
*group or partner activities (partner read with post-it notes, *scavenger hunts, vocab dominoes, etc.)
*listen to the story on CD
*leveled reading groups (A, O, B)
We have a two hour block.
30 min. read aloud w/comprehension/fluency/etc. activity
30-40 minutes centers, one of which is guided reading
20-30 minutes working on making meaning
30 minutes independent reading/intervention work
I also do a 90 minute block, and the schedule depends on the day. On Monday, we spend more time on spelling/phonics, and building background/vocab for the week's stories. We also hit our comprehension instruction hard on Monday. I am fortunate to have a resource teacher in my room for the entire block every day, so she takes the below/approaching group while I work with the on-level and above/beyond group. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have either a parent volunteer or our 2nd grade aide take a group, too, so I can really focus on that mid-level group one day and the beyond/above group on the other. I admit, it is hard to get everything in...I do some English outside of the 90-minute block three days a week.

90 minute reading blockor
I am at a reading first school where we are required to have a 90 minute reading block. We spend between 5-10 minutes doing sight words and reading poems together whole class to improve fluency. I then have an about 30 minute whole class lesson which will either be with phonics or a reading skill. Everyone then goes to centers. Centers vary with the story we are working with and may be listening, expository, writing, poetry, choice reading, phonics, vocabulary, or comprehension based. While students are in centers, I see small groups for more intensive study in either phonics or a comprehension skill. I see my lowest 2 groups daily, my middle group everyother day at least, and my highest group a time or two a week. I have an assistant who during center time pulls students to work on fluency as well using sight words or connected text depending on the level of the student.

40 independent reading/guided reading/strategy groups/conferences.
15 minute minilesson
30 minute independet writing with conferences
Also 20 minute read aloud (outside of reading block) 3-5 times a week.
20 minute word study block twice a week
