One of my classes required us to sign up for the Teaching Tolerance newsletter. Today they sent out a newsletter on how to teach 9/11 http://www.tolerance.org/blog/bringing-911-classroom-10-years-later
Might be something interesting to show the older students. Particularly the reactions of how at first they think that it was just an accident Then they bring some of their assistants on air to ask what they think it was (One of them identified it as a boeing, I believe) Then when the second plane hits, they are flabbergasted for a second and then they realize what is happening. Then when they get reports of the pentagon being hit, you can hear how scared they are
Bros-I actually just talked about that with one of my classes. It's a speech class and we did a general intro of what makes a good speech and one of the things we focused on was speeches in times of national/international crises. We talked about FDR's Pearl Harbor address and then talked about 9/11. I asked them to remember back to how they thought it was an accident at first and then realized what was happening. It was a great discussion!
These books look really good, especially the Courage one. Does anyone know of books about community heroes? Something that goes into detail about firefighters and police officers, etc?
Just bumping this thread... Looking for more books to prompt discussion - especially about community service.
