    Hi all,

I'll be a first year teacher of 7/8 Language Arts and Social Studies starting in September. As I'm looking to create my long range plans for Language Arts, I'm wondering how you've set up your course outline. Which unit do you choose to start the year off with? How do you organize your units (i.e. themes or concepts, etc).

I'd be interested in any feedback you have.

We're doing thematic units in LA this year. Our whole middle school has the same 4 themes (1/quarter), but with different focuses. For example, first quarter is Strong Characters. In 6th grade, they're talking about explorers and early law-makers because it aligns with their social studies. In 7th grade, we're dealing mostly with war heroes (we have 1920s on) and in 8th grade, they're looking at politicians and social heroes (to go along with civics and economics).

We are required to do one "major" formal writing piece per quarter. Beyond that, this is only my second year, and I'm still dealing with pacing things like grammar, vocabulary, that kind of stuff. We have reading as a separate class, so I'm curious to see what others suggest as well.

Along these lines, I'm teaching 7/8 LA and we have no grammar book or set curriculum. I have the guides from the previous teacher, but do you have any good (cheap) grammar resources that you know of?

I love Jeff Anderson's books--Mechanically Inclined and Everyday Editing. They are practical and provide interesting lessons that use relevant mentor texts. I use them all the time!

We have provincial curriculum expectations (standards) that we need to cover. How we do that and the resources we use are completely up to the individual teacher.

So do we, and I'll get in BIG trouble if I don't follow the framework!

I've taught grammar before, so I'm good with teaching it but need fun resources for the kids. Are there handouts you use from your text?

MrsC - are there other resources that you use or do you just make it up as you go / as you read students' writing, etc.?
