Hi! Does anyone do the promotion on a different day rather than the last day of school? If so, please tell me your tradition for promotion? Also, what do you do the last day of school? We are thinking of changing things and are also trying to encourage attendance on the last day. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

We don't do anything special for promotion in sixth grade (my students change schools to the middle school for seventh grade).

On the last day of school, we give out rewards, sign yearbooks, and finish packing up all our supplies.

Our fifths get a certificate of achievement during a recognition ceremony. They make a presentation to the whole school of memories they've had throughout their time in elementary school. Kids will go and speak on memorable events they hold dear in each of the grade levels, 4-5 kids' memories in each of the grades.

We do our promotion on the Monday or Tuesday of the last week. We do it at the local highschool theater....more seating. A student from each class presents a speech to the 300 in the seats. Principal does principal awards for students and we, the teachers, give a speech waxing poetic about the year. PTA puts on some juice and cookies afterwards....done at night usually. Kids get all dressed up and LOTS of pictures.

Having the students say a few comments is a nice idea! dudeteacher...what do you do on the last day to encourage attendance since they have already received their awards?

We have ours the last day, which is a 2 hr early dismissal. We give out the special awards honoring kids for their achievements throughout the year, not just the last quarter. They walk across the stage to receive a packet with certificates, their report card, and a certificate that recognizes the promotion. We have a student say the pledge, a mistress and master of ceremonies that do all of the introducing and really run the show, a boy and a girl that give a speech about the future, 2 chorus songs, and a solo or duet by talented band/string members. We also create a slide show with pictures from the year and from previous years. Each child gets a copy of the slide show to keep. We spend several days practicing entering the gym, standing, sitting, exiting, handshaking, walking across the stage, singing... After the ceremony, we have light refreshments.

Thursday evening of the last week of school. All of the above done during the ceremony.

Friday: Clean room completely, play games, candy awards, watch movie.

They all come because they are friends with each other and want to be there with them.

At the end of the day, they have their graduation walk around the school.

Candy awards are fun, and no parents are allowed in the room. That's because the kids can take a joke, but parents can't. We'll give things like "The Gummy Worm" award to kids who wiggle around all the time, "Now or Later Award" to those who don't pay much attention to when things are due, and some nice ones, like "Lifesavers".

We have a 5th Grade "Graduation" Night. It lasts forever but we don't have to be involved in the last day of school recognition for the younger students which is nice as we can then have a cookout and spend the time outside on the last day of school.
