So, all of Monday's worksheets would go in the Monday folder and when the absent student returns, they will get the papers from the Monday folder. My area. Data Board - each student will have an owl that they will move to a section based on their reading/math benchmark scores. The three papers on the left will have our school vision/mission statement, and class reading/math graphs. Twitter Board - I had wanted to post this outside my room but that was nixed once the rules came out that nothing could be posted outside our room, unless it was on our grade level bulletin board. Anyhow, each student will have a laminated sentence strip that they will write a tweet on to explain something they learned that day. Writing Process Board - each student has another little owl that they'll move through the writing process. Classroom Library Classroom Management - rules, consequences, rewards are posted. I divide my class up into four houses and they earn points as a team. They put their points in the owl envelopes at the bottom and the blue chart is to track how many points each student earns. The house with the most points at the end of the month earn a reward and I will include the top point earners from the other three hours in the reward.
Very nice! I like it! I noticed youre doing daily 5 and I also noticed the FOSS science kits. Im toying around with using daily 5 with my 3rd graders. Are you self contained? I cant imagine being self contained after 2nd grade! Where I live The only grade that is self contained is Kindergarten.
This will be my first year using Daily 5/CAFE so it will be interesting to see how it all goes. I'm currently in the process of researching Daily 5 math. I am self contained.
Daily 5 math sounds interesting! Math is my FAVORITE subject to teach, but I teach reading. I wanted to do daily 5 with my reading classes, but i don't think I'll be able to. I teach four third grade reading classes. Each class is 1hr 10min log... I don't think I have enough time to do daily 5 and whole group teaching in only an hour each day.
Could you modify it to Daily 3? You need about 15 minutes for a mini-lesson, so you could do one, Daily 3 for about 20-25 minutes, another 15 minute mini-lesson and then Daily 3 for 20-25 minutes. I won't do all five every. The class has to do Read to Self at least once a day (Wednesday-Friday) and then choose another activity for the second rotation. So by the end of the week, they should have gotten to 4 out of the 5 stations. I'm still working the kinks of it all out.
I was at the 2 Sisters' conference last week, and they said that they don't ever do all 5 either. They shoot for 3 in primary and 2 in the older grades. Even if you don't use all the aspects of it, it's worth checking out just for the "10 steps to independence" and how they suggest building stamina for independent work.

Your room is just fantastic! I love everything about it. Those kids are lucky to have you! A question about your absent folders...(an idea which I may be borrowing/stealing! )... at the end of the week, where do any handouts that still remain go? Do they get recycled or do you keep them in some other storage system for the trimester? I also had houses, but now call them Regions... all in a fictional world. The kids eat it up! They love competitions and building up unity. (The students stay in the same Regions all year long). Best system I ever put in place. Best wishes for a great new year! Thanks for sharing your photos.

Thanks so much for answering me. I think I may do the same. I hate saving things only to find in June having truckloads (it seems!) of papers to have to recycle!
