Anyone else teaching this next year? I would love to have others to share ideas with and keep in touch throughout the school year. PM me if you're up for it. Thanks!
I won't be teaching it this coming year, but have taught a grade 4/5 split (for 2 years), a grade 5/6 split and a grade 7/8 split.
Next year my SPED class will be 2-5. Most years it has been K-5 so I've had lots of experience teaching combo classes.
4th-5th Combo I have taught fourth grade for 7 years and will be teaching a 4th-5th combo next year. I am also a CA teacher (focusing on the same standards). I'm also looking for someone to share info..ideas with.
Great! What publishers are you working with? I have spelling contracts and vocabulary worksheets/quizzes done. If you have the same book I would not mind sharing them. Also, do you have ideas on supplemental activities you'll be using?
RE California I am also teaching a 4/5 combo next year, mine is a GATE. I really need ideas also. My main concern is how to teach science and social studies to both groups since they are not related at all. Help!!!
I am also teaching a 4/5 combo next year. I just agreed to this today and have 3 weeks to prepare! I am one of 4 teachers in the entire district piloting this and am the last one to hop on board. I've got a lot of work to do and would love to exchange ideas!
Me too! I just found out I'll be teaching a 4/5 combo starting in 3 weeks! I'm also looking for people to share with
I'm teaching a 3/4/5 combo, with a few possible 2nd graders thrown in for good measure. We're using Investigations for math, Reading and Writing Workshops, Words Their Way and the GEMS guides for science. I chose ecosystems/food chains and chemistry as our two science units so we can hit a power standard from each grade level. We'll be California History for social studies. I'm not working on plans for another week-I'm working on my room design at the moment-but I'll try to remember to post as I plan. For those in CA, where are you located? I'm in San Francisco, if any of you are close and want to meet in person to share ideas! Lots of great coffee shops around here!
Hi all -- found out today that I'm teaching a 4/5 combo starting Monday! Talk about last minute! Anyway, I would love to collaborate, especially with any California teachers as we have the same standards...HM Math, LA and Writers Workshop.
Hi, I'd be happy to help! I love teaching my 4/5 combo! My district used to use HM ELA, but now uses Open Court. I have the spelling lists and vocabulary worksheets done for both curriculums. PM me your email and I'll send them to you. We have the same math. Does your district use thinkcentral.com? Lots of great resources on there and pdf files of the textbooks and other pieces of the curriculum, as well as cool games and interactive lessons for the kids. What curriculum are you using for Social Studies and Science? Have a great first day and keep us posted as to how it goes. =)
I am teaching 3/4/5. One subject I am struggling with is how to run my spelling. How many different lists do you offer? My school is all about individualized instruction, but I can not imagine having 15-20 different spelling lists!!!! How do you choose your words?
I use the spelling lists provided by the ELA program we use, which is Open Court. I use a list for each grade level: one list for my 4th graders and one for my 5th graders. I give a pre-test on Monday and those that pass with 100% don't have to take it on Friday. For practice during the week, I give a Spelling Contact that has their list of words on one side and the activities to complete on the other. Students have to choose 3 activities from that list.
7/8 combo Can you tell me how you went about teaching 7/8 in the same class. I was recently informed that about 7 high-achieving 8th grade students will be placed in my 7th grade ELA class.
Just a thought....I don't teach a split, but we did Developmental Spelling for a year in our district. I thought it worked well. There are four levels, and you group your students according to their level. In my 5th grade that year, I had 3 groups. One group was larger, but I only had 3 lists to work with. I worked with each individual group for 10 minutes slots, and the other kids worked independently on word work.
