I am planning on doing a novel study in my 3rd grade classroom over the course of a week and a half. I am wanting to know if anyone has any recommendations for read aloud in for a 3rd grade classroom. I'm looking for something that has a theme or lesson involved. Thanks!

Two of my favorites for third grade are "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" by Louis Sacher and "Stone Fox" by John Reynolds Garner. Both have a fairly strong theme. "Stone Fox" would be a lot more realistic for a week and a half though.

I second Stone Fox. The problem I had was once we reached Chapter 5 the students begged to keep reading and there were times the book was finished in 2 days! I also had success with The Chocolate Touch.

Which is this for, a novel study the kids will be reading or a read aloud they will be listening to?

    The BFG by Roald Dahl
    The Witches by Roald Dahl
Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks
    Shiloh by Phyllis Reynold Naylor
    Monster's Ring by Bruce Coville

Shiloh is the best one of the above with a theme.

Also, I agree with gr3teacher. There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom and Stone Fox are excellent choices for 3rd grade read alouds.

Re: BFG... I don't like it when kids have already watched a movie before we read a book. Anyone else feel like that? With the new BFG movie coming out, I was thinking how great it would be if we read it and then took the kids to see the movie. But I'm guessing half of them will have already watched the movie, and so I'm not considering reading BFG this year.
